[ My understanding was that he only re-signed with the Bears because he felt like he was going to be the starter. Whoops.

Jerry has specifically said on a number of occasions that Rex and Kyle were promised an open competition and that's all. No guarantees before camp that one would be the starter.

Mike Mulligan (Sun-Times beat reporter) has been saying for weeks that the Bears have 9 million left. Maybe that was before Hester.

I just like seeing stupid people get their comeuppance. That would simply be the best way to do it to Bears fans.

I'm totally with this. Especially when it's the willfully stupid.

People who think Rex resigned because he thought he was going to be a starter here, please tell me which NFL team was going to give him a better shot to start than the Bears.

I bet Rex is wondering why the hell he came back. I know I am.

Sure Grossman makes some dumb plays, but there's not even a question that he's a better quarterback than Orton. I don't really understand the purpose of starting Orton, but I'm sure most of the smart Bears fans don't either.

And there's no way Anquan Boldin is going to want to go to the Bears. Absolutely no way.

That's just plain ignorant to say.

He's a game manager that makes mistakes, where as Grossman takes chances and makes mistakes. Because he doesn't take as many chances, Orton doesn't make as many mistakes, though.

Orton has a lower TD to INT rate. He might be a game mananger, but he throws more INTs than Grossman.

No he throws less interceptions than Grossman (in a interception to passing attempt model) but less touchdowns as well. Then again when you take into account roughly 80% of Orton's passing attempts came in his rookie year there's a good chance he actually will throw TD's at a better rate than Grossman (like how he did last year when Grossman took twice as many attempts to throw a TD).

i don't know how on earth you could say that.

i never thought i'd see the day when bears fans pined for the days of john shoop, but everyday is like that, now.

Exactly. If Culpepper and Leftwich can't get a starting job in FA then no way Grossman would have gotten one.

I am so bored I decided to wade through the cesspool that is the ChicagoSports.com comments section on the Orton/Grossman stuff.

Someoe called Rex "Chicago's Battered Wife". I laughed.

Someone else pointed out that people should be as critical of Orton as they were of Grossman. They won't be.

And for what it's worth, I hope the Bears are stupid enough to cut him, because there's a team in this division that could pick him up, and has enough talent that Rex could absolutely murder teams.

I'd just like to see the meatball Bears fans deal with that.

I never could imagine when I would truly root against the Bears, but if Rex gets another job and starts against the Bears. I might.

well, the meatballs rooted against grossman and the bears, so i could see myself doing the same at that point.

if rex were available, the vikings might have been wise to give him a look.

Travaris while not good showed quite a bit of potential last year and could turn into a average to above average QB. SO why would they throw that away to sign a guy who had chances to prove himself, couldn't, and wasn't resigned.

Both Orton and Grossman suck, and both QB's are below avg. but im still suprised by this move.

I thought for sure Rex would of won the starting job.

And anyone who thinks the Vikings would start Grossman over T-Jack, your wrong.

Whacchu gonna do without golden boy?

Gonna be hilarious when the Packers somehow find a way to get a worse record than the Bears this year.

This is true. I'm beating the same drum again but look at Tarvaris' second half last year. He was absolutely awful his first 5 games but showed a lot of improvement down the stretch with no receiving options while Rice was injured. By first-year QB standards the last 7 games were very successful.

Since then he's done nothing but raise his stock in the eyes of the staff and front office. The local media and even the more unbiased national guys who have been in have constantly talked about how much better he looks this year in camp.

Add in that they took him in the 2nd round, he has more physical skills than Rex and is much, much more familiar with the offense and there's no way they would take him and elevate him to starter. If there was any interest they would have pursued him this spring rather than Gus.

What's stupid is the notion that you are implying that Bears fans are somehow unjustified in dislike of Grossman. Dude was a 1st round pick. He showed flashes, got hurt. Showed more flashes, got hurt again. Was the league MVP after week 6 in 06, but then had a handful of some of the worst games a NFL QB could play.

That being said, I'm probably the biggest Grossman fan here. I wanted him to succeed more than anyone. The fact is, he hasn't. He's still probably the best QB on the Bears roster, but at this point it doesn't matter. The Bears offense will stink with or without him. We've already seen it stink with him in it. Might as well see it stink in a different way with Orton.

Someone said the 3 QB's would be Orton, Grossman, Hanie. Actually, don't be surprised if we pick up Tampa's scraps, like Simms, and push Hanie to the practice squad.

No way. Every player on the Packer offense is better than the Bears counterpart with the exception of Kreutz. They have a solid defense too. The Packers will contend for the division and a Wild Card spot.

I did nothing of the sort. This is obviously a pick a knife or a sharper knife and then cut off your own fingers kind of situation. I didn't say anyone couldn't dislike Grossman, but I think it's silly to want Orton to start over him.

If the Bears run a goaline offense with 3 TEs sets they might have a shot at protecting the QB this year and eliminating the killer negative plays. It would be total joker football but hilarious at the same time...wait this offense will be hilarious anyway, hilarously sad. Don't go grabbing a beer before a punt or kickoff because thats when the O hits the field.

If they pick up a vet, I think they'd rather keep Hanie around and cut Grossman.

I really don't understand all the rage surrounding this announcement. Rex was in a pretty crappy situation with the line he had, but he deserved the criticism he got. Why is it "meatball" to not like him? He's not a good pro quarterback. He could succeed with a great line and strong talent all around him, but when things went bad with him he was unable to stop the bleeding. He was given more chances than just about any failed QB in NFL history.

The Bears defense would absolutely destroy Rex Grossman.

Why is it so hard for people to realize the vast majority of Orton's #s were accumulated during his rookie year when he was pressed into action, while almost all of Rex's numbers occured while he was a veteran? You cannot say "Orton throws just as many INT" as Rex based on those 15 games in his rookie season.

It doesn't matter who the bears have at QB this year. The offensive line is, well, down right offensive. Or maybe offen-sieve. It is going to be a LOOOONG year.

Just remember to viciously mock anyone who drafts a bear on offense in your fantasy league drafts.

It might not matter. But if they are going to do anything this year, they are going to need a QB that can get rid of the ball quickly and not throw up jump balls off his heals. I believe Rex is the worse of the two QBs when it comes to dealing with pressure, which means it's probably a good idea to go with Orton if you know you are going to be under pressure all season, and there isn't going to be much of an opportunity for 7-step drops with 30 yard passes.

Anyone want to take a guess at how good/bad the offense would be with Tom Brady at QB as opposed to Kyle Orton? Would it even matter that much?
