Just out of curiosity...prior to 2004, when the Cardinals tied us, did any NL team have more NL pennants than the Cubs?

Top of my head, I'd guess the Giants, but I dunno.

Dodgers 21, Giants 20, Cardinals 17.

Should've known that. I totally forgot how long those teams had been around. ](*,)

Who cares about total pennants anyway? That reminds me of the article I read today by Mariotti where he says that Rex has more turnovers than Orton even though he has about twice as many starts

Damn counting stats :P

Is there a worse player than Cedeno? What a waste that guy is.

Ronny's been terrible lately, but yes, there are many many worse players than Ronny.

Thank you capt. literal. Let me whine like a little baby.

Not that it matters. The Cubs have 16 pennants, over 10,000 wins, a well over .500 all time record... but none of that matters because they haven't managed to win a WS in 100 years.

You're absolutely right.

You honestly believe that?

Would you have anymore satisfaction as a fan if the Cubs had managed to pull one out in 69 or 75 or 84 or any other year?

Who the hell cares?

I was commenting more on the bolded part... that at the end of the year, it doesn't mean anything to win your division if you don't win the World Series.

That's a little depressing. Surely there must be enjoyment in a good year over a bad year, right? I'd much rather get there and lose every year than be out of it in mid-August. I think it still means a lot to win your division.

It means something, but the goal of every single team is obviously to win the World Series. If you don't win it, you failed your goal. The Cubs have failed since 1908.

True, that's the ultimate goal of the team. But the ultimate goal of the fans is to be able to enjoy the team the most. Obviously, winning a world title is the best way to do that, but playing consistently good baseball from year to year has to be a close second, even if it comes with disappointment at the end of the year. 2003 for example was a great year to be a fan..so many good times and great games in that year. Last year was another great year. This year has been a whole lot of fun, and that's not going to change if the Cubs bomb out in the playoffs (although if they collapse the next two months, the opinion of the year probably does change).

its honestly minorly embarrassing that we haven't won the world series in 100 but yeah doesn't affect my satisfaction that much

It is an indictment of how poorly anyone and everyone who has run this team in the last 100 years is

Yeah, well, after living through the '84 debacle trust me I would rather have won.

Yes, and to the person who asked about how I'd feel if we had won in 1984: At least I'd remember winning a world series.

Same for me in 2003.

Sure, i'd probably still be on here complaining, but at least the memory of winning the 2003 World Series would be of some comfort.

I'm sure that would really make a big difference in how you feel about this team. Remembering a world series from when you were 8.

Is Lilly showing horsemanship by heading to the barn??

Not sure, Brenly only said it a hundred times... I need to hear it at least 250 times before it starts to sink in.

Please hold the lead! :beg:

And I see how bad we need a good rh pinch hitter, Cedeno the first option?

Well on most days, when a RH starts, Reed will be the first RH pinch hitter.

well, I don't care nearly as much about the Bears winning a Superbowl as I do about a cubs WS, and that was 22 years ago. (and I'm a bigger football fan than baseball)

I still get warm fuzzies from Super Bowl XXXI.

I was bringing up 1984 and 89 more for the people in their 20's like me who either wouldn't have been alive or wouldn't have remembered it much.

The 85 Bears, for instance, mean nothing to me, honestly. I was 2. The 2006 team that lost in the Super Bowl means a lot more to me.

Whether the Cubs had won a title in 69 or not, I'd feel the same way I do about this team. And we're much better off than most team's fan bases these days.

It was more a vent/rant in response to when people act like the Cubs have never won just because they've never won a WS. They don't always find ways to lose or whatever it is people like to say (especially when this anecdotal crap is used in reference to regular season games, anyway). They've had some great teams, some pretty good ones, some mediocre ones, some very bad ones, and some terrible ones, just like most other teams.

Hell, these days, like I said, we're among the teams that actually has a chance in hell of contending for/winning a WS. There are a few teams that can't say that much. Every single year.

I have to say Cotts has been decent of late. He would be a good set up man for Marmol, but Lou only uses him mostly for 1 batter unlike today.
