Hey! I think I'll pour some of this gas on the ground and then throw a match on it. What will surely happen is that the most beautiful butterfly in the world will form and fly away.

OW!! MY LEG IS ON FIRE!! WHY IS THIS HAPPENING?? WHO KNEW THAT THROWING FIRE ON GAS WOULD BE A BAD THING??? WHY AM I LOU Piniella??

What?

This is (a) me trying to be funny (and failing) by trying to use a metaphor to explain Lou's thought process on the hit-and-run, and (b) a result of me being very tired.

Yeah, I just got it. It went whooshing over my head the first time.

its honestly minorly embarrassing that we haven't won the world series in 100 but yeah doesn't affect my satisfaction that much

It is an indictment of how poorly anyone and everyone who has run this team in the last 100 years is

Yeah, well, after living through the '84 debacle trust me, I would rather have won.

I was 3 in 1984.

Thinking about 2003 still makes me angry.

Not that it matters. The Cubs have 16 pennants, over 10,000 wins, a well over .500 all time record... but none of that matters because they haven't managed to win a WS in 100 years.

You're absolutely right.

You honestly believe that?

Would you have anymore satisfaction as a fan if the Cubs had managed to pull one out in 69 or 75 or 84 or any other year?

Who the hell cares?

I was commenting more on the bolded part... that at the end of the year, it doesn't mean anything to win your division if you don't win the World Series.

That's a little depressing. Surely there must be enjoyment in a good year over a bad year, right? I'd much rather get there and lose every year than be out of it in mid-August. I think it still means a lot to win your division.

Just out of curiosity...prior to 2004, when the Cardinals tied us, did any NL team have more NL pennants than the Cubs?

Top of my head, I'd guess the Giants, but I dunno.

2003 doesn't make me angry, it makes me sad. That team really had a special feeling.

2004 is the season that pisses me off.

It means something, but the goal of every single team is obviously to win the World Series. If you don't win it, you failed your goal. The Cubs have failed since 1908.

Yea, I'm glad I wasn't around for that...but our generation of fans definitely got our own version of that in '03. I can honestly say I didn't need to find out what it felt like.

The subsequent disastrous collapse of that pitching staff (which would've made us a playoff powerhouse for years to come) over the next few years was the cherry on top.

Dodgers 21, Giants 20, Cardinals 17.

If you celebrated the last two division titles, like I did, then winning the division sure does mean something.

Should've known that. I totally forgot how long those teams had been around. ](*,)

I'm done with Cedeno being on this team. He looks abolutely pitiful in PH appearances. Throw him a lifeless fastball 2 feet high and 2 feet outside and he'll flail at it every single time.

Yes, and to the person who asked about how I'd feel if we had won in 1984: At least I'd remember winning a world series.
