There is rumblings that Soriano might be back tomorrow if he fares well in Mesa in the morning. Lou said it was 25/75, but hey I like our odds.

We need to come to play every day. With the Brewers/Cardinals playing the next 4 games, someone is ready to gain ground every game.

I much rather Soriano get a game or two in the minors before being activated. I want Soriano back at 100%, not 85%.

I saw soriano warming up before the sunday game in Houston. He looked good. Quade was hitting him some flyballs and his throws were strong home and he was moving well on the bases. Also during BP he was driving the ball well.

Does anyone realize that at the end of this series, we finish a 44 game stretch where we

-played 29 road games and only 15 home games

-missed our All Star LF almost the entire time

-missed our ace for 2 starts

-missed our closer for 10 games

-played 6 series (5 on the road) against teams that currently occupy playoff sports

Our record in that span? 22-19 (with 3 to go).

After this, we play 26 of our next 39 at home, and only 2 series (both at home) against teams that currently occupy playoff spots. Oh and we'll have our All Star LF, closer and ace back for most if not all of that time.

My guess: we will without a doubt have at least a 5 game lead going into what looks to be an impossible September

When Soriano went down I just wanted to go .500 until he came back. Anything more is a bonus IMO. I hope we can gain some ground in August though, and avoid taking a crap next week in Milwaukee.

Dang, I didn't realize it'd been that tough. Good job looking all that up.

Should be some fun numbers when it's time to look at July splits. Fontenot has done a great job of replicating hot Soriano.

It might not be a bad idea to look at a DeRosa/ Fontenot platoon for awhile.

Nice post, but I have to ask. Who are you, and what did you do with UMFan83?

Not too bad. Two out of three in Arizona, where we almost never play well, and we'll be in good shape.

From now until Sept 1st we need to make some serious hay in the standings. I want as big of a cushion as possible going into that tough 10-game stretch to end the year.

"Just how quickly can Alfonso Soriano get back in the lineup? ''How about [tonight] if he feels good after the three or four at-bats [in a Class A game this afternoon]?'' Piniella said. ''How about that? It's wishful thinking. But put it this way: It's thinking, at least.'' The possible acceleration of Soriano's rehab plan arose out of the leadoff man's encouraging results from aggressive, pain-free batting-practice sessions Saturday and Sunday. He's scheduled to play for rookie-A Mesa in a game this afternoon in Peoria, Ariz., after which a decision will be made about whether to send him to Tucson to play in a Class AAA game Tuesday for the visiting Iowa Cubs."

It would be nice, but I wouldnt bet on it.

I wonder if they are thinking about it to give Fukudome a day off against Johnson? Going with Soriano, Edmonds, Johnson in the OF? But Soriano is only 1-8 w/ 4 Ks against the Unit in his career so that may put a damper on it even if he does see the ball and swing the bat well this afternoon.

Starting Thursday, the Cubs have 13 of 17 in Chicago. Then have a 6 game road trip followed by 13 of 16 at home. The only road series in those 2 long stretches of 13 home games are right up the road in Milwaukee and Wrigley East, PNC Park.

It really does put things in perspective.

Still, if only we could have won the opener vs the 'Strolls.......

From Will Carroll's chat:

Shae (Chicago): Will, there are rumors that Soriano might leave the rehab. game early and could even play tonight, what's the latest?

Will Carroll: That's what I'm hearing. I have someone at Sky Harbor watching ...

BTW, Soriano was 0-2, BB, K, R in his rehab start today before being pulled for a PH in the 6th.

Nah, I told you all that most of my extreme pessimism comes during or immediately after games. Not that I'm a huge optimist the rest of the time (79 win prediction in 2007, 83 win prediction in 2008), but I am definitely more rational and levelheaded.

So Soriano was lifted for a pinch runner because his day was done or hes getting ready to play tonight? mhm. It would be nice to see him back.

Oh and I'm still giddy about watching Harden pitch. Its like when you get a new girlfriend and you go out and pick her up instead of just telling her to get a bus pass so you don't have to get up.

Soriano was on fire the last 2 times he came of the DL..That would be awesome again..Plus having a Harden going on at the same time.

I'm going to start abusing my powers and ban people who make Harden and Wood jokes. They're not funny. Stop doing it!
