Will we make a roster move Friday or will we take 13 pitchers out of the break?

I thought for sure we'd go back to 12 pitchers and bring up a hitter...maybe Hoffpauir or Dubois, but I still haven't seen anything about it.

According to the Trib:

The Cubs made no moves during the All-Star break, but they're expected to add a .400 hitter to the roster when they return to the field Friday night at Houston's Minute Maid Park.

Micah Hoffpauir, who hit .400 in 18 games during call-ups in May and June, will be recalled from Triple-A Iowa for a third time to take the reserve outfield spot vacated when Matt Murton was traded to Oakland on July 8.

The Cubs never replaced Murton, opting to go with 13 pitchers for the final six games before the break. One of the relievers could be sent to Iowa on Friday to make way for Hoffpauir. Kevin Hart or Neal Cotts is the likely choice.

Why send Cotts down? Hasn't he been pretty good.

Kevin Hart has no use being on this team. I'm guessing he's the one who gets sent down, especially since Cotts is a lefty.

It will be Hart down, Dubois up. We have 2 solid lefties on the bench, and Cedeno and Blanco are the only righties. Of course whoever does come up, will be enjoying about a week long stay until Soriano returns.

Cotts deserves to stay up as long as hes doing what hes doing. I say when the time comes for Eyre to come back, either send Marshall to Iowa, just so he can keep up his routine as a starter, and trade or DFA Lieber, and if Marquis does his normal second half collapse, Marshall will be right there waiting.

I can't see them adding Dubois to the 40 man roster just for one week when they can bring up Hoffpauir instead.

Why so many lefties? Besides, the Harden trade left an extra opening on the 40 man, and if Dubois keeps doing what hes doing in Iowa, he'll definitely be a September call up anyway. Also, if it comes down do it, there are several other who can be removed from the 40 man.

fwiw, WGN radio (Dave Eanet) this morning has had a mention that the Cubs would make a roster move later today, and Hoffpauir is already in Houston. No mention of who is being sent down. (Apologies for no link, probably no story until it's announced.)

Going from most sensible to least sensible reliever to be sent down or DFAd

Hart

Lieber

Marshall

Cotts

So I guess it means Cotts will be sent down.

Always happy to see Hoff come back, although I hope he doesnt bother unpacking his suitcase.

No way I'd send Marshall down before Cotts, he's simply better. Liebs can't be sent down, I don't see Hendry DFA'ing him at all (although he should if Lou isn't going to use him).

With Marshall, it depends if they want him as a reliever, or if they want to keep him stretched out as a starter in Iowa when...I mean if Marquis has his colapse.

As for Lieber, I wouldnt be surprised if some team in desperate need for pitching would want him.

Isnt Eyre also due back?

yeah, my guess is

Hoff up, Eyre activated

Hart, Marshall sent down.

Cubs probably want to keep Marshall stretched out for when Marquis implodes.

Any reason why Raisin? Didnt he pitch last weekend in Peoria?

Yeah, and he looked really bad in Peoria.

How do you guys feel about how good Lieber has contributed to the team?

Who?

Jon Lieber, relief pitcher- Chicago Cubs

oh yeah, the effective reliever who gets to pitch once a week if he's lucky

He definitely doesn't pitch much with Lou's love to only use Howry, Marmol, and Wood. The couple of times I've seen him pitch he really hasn't looked good to me. I wonder if he's a candidate to be moved soon.

he's been pretty effective as a reliever. WHIP around 1.24, ERA of 2.53 K:BB around 5:1. he's only walked 5 (3 were intentional) in 42.6 IP
