Francisco Liriano's agent has contacted the players' association about pursuing a grievance against the Twins for not promoting him.

Perhaps Liriano has himself stashed away in his fantasy league. He is 7-0 with a 2.73 ERA in his last nine starts at Triple-A, and his fastball is consistently in the mid-90s and touching 97. He is claiming that the Twins are purposely keeping him in the minors to limit his major league service time and thus his arbitration eligibility. Livan Hernandez has a 7.28 ERA in his past ten starts, but he's also owed $5 million this season. Liriano could have major league service time added to his total if he wins.

I think he has a legit case. I have no idea why the Twins haven't called him up yet, especially in the midst of a hot streak and a run at the division. It makes no sense.

They haven't brought him up because the only pitcher not performing well has a contract they don't want to eat. Smith's comments are right, if they were conspiring to keep his service time down, they wouldn't have let him start the year in the big leagues. I must say though, I don't appreciate this publicity when I'm hoping I'm the only one who remembers Liriano in my fantasy league when he comes back.

He's not going to win. It would set a horrible precedent for any top prospect who feels he deserves his shot. You can't force teams to call up prospects. If that prospect starts out poorly and needs to be sent down after being forced to be called up could the team file a grievance to gain some wins back?

Of course Liriano deserves to be in the majors, but if the Twins want to hurt themselves(both in the now, and in the goodwill with Liriano for the future sense), then that's their perogative.

Glenn Perkins isn't exactly lighting the world on fire, though he is better than Hernandez. Move him to the pen to make room for Liriano, let him suck in short bursts rather than long ones. Any way to get Liriano back into that rotation will be worth it.

As far as the publicity comment, I'm right there with you

God, if it isn't enough to have abuck whining about Hill and Liriano in Roadkill, now he's whining all over the forum.

He hasn't been called up because the Twins management decided not to call him up. Sheesh, the sense of entitlement of these players is insane. Nobody is "owed" a major league roster spot.

yeah, it's absurd that a guy who was possibly one of the top five pitchers in baseball when he got hurt and has been destroying AAA hitters for two months thinks he should be in the bigs.

4 starts in july

0.32 ERA

0.68 WHIP

10.6 k/9

.155 BAA

i wonder if they could have used him in the Yankees series?

I don't care if they are not calling him up in order to save on arbitration or whatever. But, the what makes it even more stupid is when they say they have a set starting rotation. What? dude this guy is dominating AAA, bring him up! and than if he lays an egg than you have a reason to send him down.

Agreed. They're content with the fact that their young pitchers are performing adequately, and Livan Hernandez has a winning record despite a decrepit ERA/WHIP so they don't want to move him.

This is their excuse to leave him down there. "We keep winning without him!"

Newsflash: You will have more chances at winning than losing with him in the rotation. Their inability to realize this gives him a good case. Their line of thinking is so idiotic it's citoidi. That's right... citoidi

Why don't they just trade him if they can't afford to pay him? They could get buco solid prospects for the kid, and those prospects wouldn't be all that expensive.

At some point they've got to do something with him, right? It's either up or out.

It's not that they can't afford to pay him now. It's that they're trying to delay getting to the time when they won't be able to afford him. They probably feel that they're in a good position to do that since they are remaining in contention without him. A lot of people seem to feel the Twins would probably be best suited to dump Livan on someone in need of a starter and call up Liriano, which might not be a bad idea. However, Glen Perkins is coming off a season where he threw 48 innings total. He's already thrown 90.3 innings this year, so they might want to give him a bit of a break in the second half. Maybe they could move him to the pen to limit his innings and give Liriano some starts down the stretch. Or perhaps they want to limit Liriano's innings, too. He hardly pitched last year and is coming off arm surgery. They might not want to over-extend him this year and just keep him fresh for 2009.
