marquis really isn't as bad as everyone thinks he is - someone has made the point that he's not "Estes in 2003"-level bad, which is how everyone treats him. He's a somewhat worse than average, which is fine out of a 5th starter who's not going to see the field in the playoffs. The Cubs have a good enough offense to win during his average and good starts.

This is the right move. No sense forcing a move with Marquis before we have to. Hope he throws well next game or 2, and dump the contract on somebody else. We have no problem with depth, so Marquis is completely unnecessary, but as has been stated, he's not really actively hurting us by staying in the rotation. Not nearly enough to eat 9M in next year's salary at this point.

Not really fair to keep him in the rotation over someone who is better and a lefty (while Lou has expressed a desire to have at least 2 in the rotation)

The only real reason is because he's making 7 million dollars, which makes me gag

Wow, all this angst over Marquis/Marshall.... I guess we have to complain about something.

I gleaned this from another board- I think it's a good perspective.

"Texas is 3 games above 0.500. They have 9 guys with 4 or more starts. Their top 3 starters

Padilla 107 IP 10W 5L 4.70 ERA

Millwood 94 IP 6W 4L 4.93 ERA

Feldman 84 IP 3W 3L 4.39 ERA

Compare to JM

Marquis 92 IP 6W 5L 4.78 ERA"

Of course, those guys are pitching in the American League with half their starts in a band box.

But yea.

Padilla just went on the DL and Millwood has been hurt (not sure if he still is).

Now is as good a time as any to let Texas know they have options. Expensive options, but options nonetheless. Heck, if Texas would pick up most of Marquis' contract, that's all I'd ask in return. Then we can read in the transactions page tomorrow that:

Cubs trade Marquis to Texas for nobody. Wouldn't that be fun?

no offense, but that' not perpective at all. would you say it would be smart for the Rangers to keep running Millwood out there if they had a more effective option in-house? of course not. but that's the situation the Cubs (theoretically) face. They have a likely better option on hand and are choosing (if Sullivan is accurate) to use the worse option instead. these situations are not at all comparable. besides, how does the Rangers having a bad rotation make it okay for the Cubs?

i don't have a huge problem with going with Marquis for now, though I wouldn't. i just don't like your comparison here.

Moving Him would help ease Hardens salary as well or make it an opening for a good bat.

Isn't Harden's option year pretty reasonable too? It would be nice to unload Jason just to open up some salary for a bat.

I thought their salaries were a wash? What I always wanted to do was to deal for Blaylock (Tex) and move him to second base.

Given Marquis is not going to be sent to the bullpen why not give Marshall a few starts in Iowa while Hendry tries to move Marquis?

I'd be game for that as well. Afterall, Blalock on the DL is still better than Marquis in the rotation.

True! He's on the DL, what for BbB?

Blalock on the DL is a shocker to you? Wrist surgery this time.
