Sean Gallagher (3-3, 4.36 ERA, 47/20 K/BB) is coming off a rough outing against the White Sox, in which he threw 121 pitches in only six innings, allowing five runs. Lou Piniella, in line with his recent showings of "tough love" to his players, responded after the game by forcing Gallagher to shove a fork into a light socket.

Tim Lince%#& (9-1, 2.38 ERA, 114/43 K/BB, age 11) takes the mound for the Giants tonight. He's pretty good. The Royals roughed him up recently, but in his last start, he allowed no runs on 5 hits while striking out 11 against Oakland. He started against the Cubs in SF last year, and carried a shutout (1- or 2-hit, I believe) into the ninth, but his anemic offense only offered one 1 run of support against the always-deadly Jason Marquis, allowing the Cubs to finally break through in the ninth and win. If he must come out dealing tonight, here's hoping for a repeat absence of run support.

A win tonight upgrades them back to Cubs.

I'm not feeling too confident about this one, but at this point, I'd be pleased with a split. The Cubs beat the two pitchers they were supposed to, got shut down by Cain who, it sounds like, was on. If Lincecum is dealing as well, there's no shame in losing to him.

Gallagher's last outing was a little rough, but him getting thru 6 was nothing less than amazing. His stuff seemed to get better after 80 pitches of inconsistency.

tim lincecum is really, really good. fortunately the cubs' offense is really good too, while gallagher is average and the giants' offense is bad. gallagher will need a good outing here.

Linecum=really, really good

Gallagher=pretty good

Cubs offense=really, really good

Giants offense=really, really bad

This one could go either way.

The way Cain embarassed us the other day, hopefully they'll take it out on Linecum. Hell, the Royals chased him after 5 not too long ago.

I'm concerned after Gallagher's 120-pitch outing last time, which came after sitting for 9 days. I hope he comes out throwing well and that Lou doesn't over-extend him.

yeah, i'm curious to see how Sean does after the long outing (after long rest). i'm sure he'll be on a short leash. having said that, the Giants are a team he can have some success against.

here's hoping the offense can step it up (again). nice to have ramirez back for this one.

This is a big, big game. Taking 3/4 is so much different than splitting (though losing to Cain and Lincecum would be nothing to be ashamed about). While Lincecum may be the nastiest starter in baseball, I think Gallagher will shut down the Giants offense and the Cubs will win a tight one.

With the 4 PM start time, it's going to be even more of a pitcher's park with the sun. I would be very suprised if we even scored a run off of Lincecum but hopefully we are patient enough to get him out in 7 innings.

This seems like a late start for a getaway day. Mil is playing 4 hours earlier at AZ.

Giants piss me off.

They don't play until tomorrow night in STL. They'll get in very early Friday morning and play probably 12-14 hours later. It's no big deal.

With Rammy back I'm guessing the lineup goes like this?

RF Fukudome

SS Theriot

1B Lee

3B Ramirez

CF Edmonds

C Soto

LF DeRosa

2B Fontenot

P Gallagher

Not too bad really. But, I can't wait for Sori to get back so that we can slide DeRo back into that 2B slot.

Cubs win 4-3.

Edit: Will Soto get the day off, since it's a day after a night? I'd love to have our best hitters against Lincecum, but I'd like a fresh Soto for this weekend vs. the cards... :-k

It's not really a day after a night game in the true sense, since it's a 4 PM local start. I bet we see Soto, since he's DHed a bit recently to stay fresh, we're facing a good pitcher that necessitates his bat in the lineup, and he's been red hot lately.

stop ruining everyone's "the world is against the cubs" vibe.

cubs have already done what i hoped they would this series by winning two. taking this one would just be gravy.

I wasnt intending to position this as the world agains the Cubs as you think, i used Mil as an example of the what seems like a late start for a day game today. It seems like a late start. WTH is the problem with saying that.

whaaaa???

I think he's probably referring to the shadows created by a late afternoon sun. Not sure how that plays out in sanfran this time of year.

during last night's game, Brenley said the shadows would be brutal

I'm sold.

I'll be grilling out at the beach so I'll be missing this one, but I've got a good feeling. Don't let me down cubs, I'd like to don my cubs gear on the fourth during a winning streak.
