this is about as likely as the brewers trading us sabathia. but roy halladay is about to get very expensive (14.25 in 09 and 15.75 in 10), and they probably don't have much chance of competing with the rays, red sox, and to a lesser extent the yankees.

maybe jim can convince ricciardi that halladay hates playing baseball.

I wonder if the Jays would do a deal of Marquis + Cedeno + Veal (or comparable prospect) for Burnett + Eckstein.

Eckstein would take Cedeno's place as back-up middle infielder. We'd take on a bad contract in Eckstein, but would unload Marquis's money for next year.

Why would the Blue Jays give away Burnett for close to nothing? That would be a horrible deal for them.

They wouldn't be giving him away for nothing. And I guess it all depends on how motivated they are to move him.

Some reports are that they are trying to trade him to anyone who will give a young SS in return and the interest is lukewarm. That to me also indicates they aren't happy with Eckstein. This deal allows them to get out of that deal and get the SS they are seeking.

We might have to add a better player than Veal or maybe a fourth player.

The deal might not fly at all, but I think it could be possible considering the reports that have come out about the Jays unable to stir up interest in Burnett.

I said close to nothing, which is what a package of Marquis/Cedeno/Veal is, relatively speaking. Marquis has negative value due to his contract. Veal is a decent filler prospect, but his AA numbers aren't so go great, Cedeno is Cedeno. When they say that want a shortstop, I assume that they want a good shortstop. Let's be honest, Cedeno has very little value.

Toronto is actually interested in Cedeno. I know, shocking, right? The thing is, they're going to trade him for nothing if nothing is the best offer. There's no chance he stays in Toronto next year and he's a Type B at best.

Eckstein just signed a 1-year deal. So, it's not really a bad contract. The Jays would be out of his contract next year, while still having Jason Marquis for a year. They would be out of Burnett's contract, but I don't think that's worth taking Marquis either, as he's a risk to opt out anyway.

kevin goldstein's on kap's wgn show right now.

says he's heard that the a's can't find anything they're too interested by in the cubs minor league system.

maybe vitters, veal, ceda

not much value in shark, colvin - bad scouting reports, unimpressive performance. maybe for someone like maddux or wolf.

cubs will have to find a team interested in quantity over quality, because there's not much quality there.

they had a writer from toronto on the score today talking about this, he said it was a long shot and would require a good package but isn't completely out of the question

Shark has no value to other teams. He has a NTC how many times does it need to be said?

he was talking so much about how shark isn't very good and teams weren't interested in him, he didn't get around to the ntc because it wouldn't matter

Players can and have waived NTCs how many times does it need to be said?

I'd kill for Halladay, but I just don't see the Cubs having the ammunition to pull that kind of a deal off.

Yeah, and what's in it for the Jays?

Cut payroll. That's the only thing I can think of.

Also, I've heard the Rays are interested in Murton. Any chance they give up a decent prospect (like B level) in return for Murton? And could we include the prospect in a package for a good pitcher?

i think he's a 10/5 player now, so halladay would have to want to be a cub in first place for this to happen.

I doubt that's really an issue these days...

Toronto is a nice city, but I don't think you'd have to twist Roy's arm.

Either way, it's a pipe dream, IMO.

It is a pipedream, but it can't hurt to ask. If by some miralce, the Cubs do land Halladay, there would be no question that the Cubs are the NL Best, and totally counter the Brewers acquisition of CC. So, you know what they say.........."luck favors the bold." So who knowsm right?

But if they somehow landed Halladay, IDK what I would do.
