It sure seems like Derrek has hit into a ton of double plays lately. Does anyone have the exact numbers?

He's either been leading the league or close to it most of the year. Going into today, he was tied with James Loney with 17 GIDP, which leads all of MLB.

Wonder if Sportscenter will break into his ABs with a runner on first as he is on pace to break the record for most GIDPs in a season, which is 36.

Haha.

I don't know why Lee has such a high GB rate this year but Perry needs to start working with him. This is going beyond disheartening. Maybe he needs to start hitting to RF again because he is consistently pulling the ball into the ground.

And I was dismissed for suggesting we need to move DLee down in the order. He's not a 3 hitter anymore.

It sucks, but it's really not a huge deal. Pujols has been in the top 10 GIDP since his rookie year, save 2003. Just what happens when you get high contact hitters batting 3rd.

It's a big deal because it's a massive increase to previous years. He now has more GIDP than he has had in any single previous season. That's a problem.

If Lee was anywhere near Pujols' league it wouldn't be a big deal. But Pujols is an extreme contact hitter who regularly OPSs over 1000 and has a career OPS+ of 169. Lee has one season over 1000 and is a career 124 OPS+. He's also not nearly the contact hitter that Pujols is. He's a lot more like a 2 hitter or 5 hitter than a 3 hitter.

It's a factor of his terrible slump. His ground ball rates are improving over the last month:

And his BABIP is just starting to catch up:

I can't say I'm worried about it.

I've been saying that for awhile as well. I wouldn't mind hitting Kosuke third or something when Soriano comes back. Move Lee down to 5 or 6.

I'm VERY concerned with D-Lee. There is obviously something wrong with his swing for him to be on pace to break the all time DP record. It's time for he and Perry to watch the videos and see what's wrong. At this point I think he should be hitting 5th or 6th.

That DP in the 3rd changed the entire game. If Lee comes through there, you have Aramis up and you start to pile on.

If they have been watching tape, they are watching the wrong one. By now he should have this corrected.

You say this as if hitting major league pitching is easy.

That sounds like a good time.

Yeah it does. And I don't even like the Fugees all that much.

Ready or Not is a good song though.

I never said that. The fact Lee leads the world in grounding into double plays should be cause for concern from your 3 hitter. There is something in his swing that is causing him to keep beating the ball in the ground. Derrek Lee needs to be hitting fly balls, not leading the world in double plays.

Before today's game, DLee was 30th in MLB in double-play percentage (among all batters with 100 plate appearances or more).

The fact that he leads the league in double plays just means he's getting to bat with guys on first base more often than Vlad Guerrero, Jorge Posada, Skip Schumaker, etc.

His line drive rate is about where it usually is, but he IS hitting fewer fly balls and more ground balls so far this year.
