Is it me or does Fukudome always have trouble against LHPs with a decent breaking ball low and away?

He definitely wasn't picking up Sherrill's slider, although if the ump had called that fastball that was a foot outside ball 2, he may not have bit on the sliders(since if they were fastballs they would've been in that spot a foot outside).

It's so crazy the ups and downs you recieve with Cubs baseball at least we'll get some more ups and downs tomorrow i guess.

There have been far more ups than downs, after all, this team has lost the fewest games in MLB and they lead all teams in comeback wins...

It still sucks to lose. We're a little spoiled this year.

why are there still people who read cubsGM's posts?

Some of us are idealistic fools that think every poster is capable of having an open mind towards objectivity.

Gosh just saw that error again and I know if Derosa was playing more heads up he could've tagged Cintron out on that patterson error! ugh he just kind of turned lackadazikly like he didn't care.

At this point, is there anyone left who disagrees that Ronny Cedeno has no future with this team? Maybe is time to...dare I say, free Ronny Cedeno once and for all? Maybe he will be an OK player one day, but we'll never know, as he wont get the chance, as Theriot has rightfully earned the job.

Oh I know theres been a ton more ups this season but we even have a lot of downs in the games we managed to comeback and win which has been quite a few comeback wins we have this year.

With the way hes playing here we could probably give him to the cardinals for pujols and pujols would bat .100 and cedeno would bat better than Ludwick.

I'm actually getting razzed by an Orioles fan elsewhere. Do these people not realize what teams they root for, or what?

well wish the Cubs could've hung the W tonight but they didn't and there is always tomorrow because these guys are not the type that hang their hats on one game, so lets come back and get the O's tomorrow boys!

Lets hope Teddy can bring it and we can tag Rodimus Prime or whatever early and often.

Just got back from the game.

Really really annoying game.

Some thoughts:

-Cedeno showed who he really is. It's too bad Lou never gave him extensive playing time when he was playing well. We'll never know what could have been. In April he was working the count in every AB. With less playing time and less confidence he looked miserable.

-Another loss that we could easily have won. Doesn't it seem like all of our losses are like that? That 6th inning killed us. Routine fly ball drops, then a barage of 2 out runs. Just awful.

-Why why why do the Cubs have to put these 9th inning fake rallys up. As most of you know, I am completely irrational and take all losses hard until I regain sanity and perspective. In a game like this, I have already worked hard to accept a loss. When you put these types of fake rallys that get my hopes up...it KILLS me. I'm not talking about little 1st and 2nd 2 out rallys. I'm talking about getting the tying run on 3rd with 1 out in Tampa last week. I'm talking about loaded the bases with 0 outs down 2 tonight. You're killing me. Just go quietly into the damn night.

And because people looooooooooooooove my pessimism, here is the most pessimistic thought I can possibly think of tonight...enjoy: Boy this sure seems a lot like 2001. Fast start, best record in the league, unexpected unsustainable performances, and despite all this 2 teams lurk just below us (2001: St. Louis/Houston, 2008: St. Louis/Milwaukee) ready to pounce if we falter.

I certainly don't think the O's will be excited about trading Brian Roberts for him after that AB

***Freak out Alert***

This post has actually made me laugh. Call me crazy but I have a quiet confidence in this year's team. I think they will be fine. :)

I just hope people realize how much tongue and cheek humor there is in my post.

we had a lot of baserunners, and scored a decent amount of runs. sherrill's an effective closer and made 2 of our worst hitters look bad, and he was a tough matchup for fukudome. the cubs will be fine.

Sure Patterson and Blanco get some blame but WTH happened to DeRosa, he has been terrible lately. I think it is time to give him a few days off. It is sickening to see him come up and kill rally after rally.

This was actually DeRosa's best game in awhile. Had a hit and a walk in 4 plate appearances. He did ground into 1 double play, but it seems to be an odd time to complain about him being a rally killer, especially after he kept the rally going in the 9th.

The Orioles went all out to win this game, and they did. The Cubs have made their 2 most effective relievers shaky for tomorrow though. Jim Johnson threw 33 pitches, and Sherill threw 30.

I thought Lou pulled the right strings at the end. Even Blanco is an ok emergency option against a left-hander due to his significant splits. The players just didn't come through. Cedeno especially was way too aggressive in a bases loaded nobody out situation.

The way the Cubs are built are going to make them weak sometimes against left-handed setup men and closers though, because Ward, Edmonds, and Fontenot aren't hitters you can send up against left-handers in any key situation. It would be a lot better if Cedeno didn't have reverse splits of his own, but that is the way it is. The only hitters the Cubs have off the bench to counter a left-hander are Murton and Blanco, or Johnson and Blanco once Reed comes back. The rest are terrible options against any LHP.

If you're going to have any loss in the first game of the series though, this is the best kind of loss. The worst pitching matchup is out of the way, and the Cubs best arms in the pen are fresher than Baltimore's. It bodes well for the rest of the series, even if they lost tonight.

Posted

Yeah, this game really showed we need a decent righty off the bench because Cedeno is slumping and Murton has no power.

However, the Cubs really worked the Orioles bullpen, and they have two below average starters for the next two games. I know a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush, but the next two games really favor the Cubs. Let's go get 2 of 3.

It's just one game. Our home steak had to end sooner or later and I wasn't surprised to see it happen tonight.

Great near-comeback (besides the whole failing with the bases loaded, no out thing). At least this team fights every single game.

Oh and anytime Ronny Cedeno wants to turn back into April Ronny Cedeno would be fine with me.

I expected better from you. April Ronny Cedeno turned into the real Ronny Cedeno. A hot month one change the fact he can't hit big league pitching.
