On the XM MLB channel, they seemed to have extended comments from Soriano (not a sound clip, but something they were reading from) that suggested that Soriano was highly motivated to play in the All-Star game because Yankee Stadium was where he started his career and he knows there are many NY fans who appreciate the way he plays the game.

The MLB XM guys (Mark Patrick & Buck Martinez) remarked that the Cubs might not be thrilled to have Sori rush back into action to play in the All-Star game when there's a pennant to win.

I haven't seen any comments besides the ESPN link posted above, just passing along the discussion.

I don't see him back any sooner than the full six weeks. This is wishful thinking by Soriano.

Oh don't be a poopy face. Ride the wave of optimizm until you are crushed by reality a few weeks later. Rollercoasters are fun!

From a BP chat...

Steve (Chicago): There's a story on ESPN about soriano getting re-examined and being hopeful to return sooner than expected. Just typical player optimism, or something to it?

Will Carroll: If you could pick a bone to break, that's the one. I said initially that I thought he could come back without much problem. I'll let it play out before I buy into the sooner than expected.

Is this essentially the same injury that Chase Utley had last season?

Didn't Chase injure his wrist?

I'm pretty sure it's the same injury that Utley had last year (at least, that's what I've read). If that's the case, then, no, Chase didn't hurt his wrist.

Except I think Chase broke a bone in his throwing hand

If he's fully healed, I'd like to see him shake the rust off for a few games down in the minors. He's the kind of guy who comes back from injury and promptly puts up an 0/12 with 6 Ks and a bunch of weak groundouts/pop outs before finally getting back into a groove.

Agreed. If I was Lou Piniella, I would tell Soriano, there is no conversation, you will play atleast a weeks worth of games at AAA, before you come back to the majors.

(I know, I read later in this thread, that someone said there will be a minor league rehab assignment)

Problem is, Lou can't do that. A player must agree to a rehabilitation assignment; the team can't require it. Blame the CBA.

Soriano feels like he could take BP on Monday...

Left fielder Alfonso Soriano hasn't even had today's scheduled X-ray on his broken hand, and he already is targeting Monday to take batting practice for the first time since the June 11 injury.

''That's what I say. It feels good,'' said Soriano, who said this week he's shooting for a quick enough recovery to play in the All-Star Game on July 15. ''We'll see.''

The team's medical staff expects today's X-ray to offer a better timeline for the return of Soriano, who will need a minor-league rehab assignment before being activated. The original estimate was six weeks from the injury.

I'm not known as a Soriano fan, in fact, I loathe his contract, but I LOVE his wanting to come back. People criticize him all the time for his gingerly running and whatnot after coming back from his injuries, but I'm starting to believe that he might have not been ready to go when he came back.

He came back to help the team and IIRC was crushing the ball even when running at 70% or whatever he was. And now he wants to get back ASAP to help the team win. I might not like his game, especially at that price, but I can't really question the guy's desire or work ethic. Very Sammy-ish...and that's a compliment.

The six week timetable for Soriano's return remains intact.

Left fielder Alfonso Soriano, out with a broken bone in his left hand, had an X-ray on Friday that also brought good news. The bone is healing well, and the six-week timetable remains in place for his return. Soriano told the Chicago Sun-Times he hopes to take batting practice on Monday, which would be 12 days after he got plunked.

Cubs manager Lou Piniella wasn't as optimistic.

"Maybe [batting practice] with a Wiffle ball," Piniella joked. "He heals quick, but not that quick."

Soriano is still aiming to return in time for the All-Star Game. Piniella is expecting just after the All-Star Game.

"I would think, just looking at it, it won't be six weeks," Lou Piniella said on Wednesday. "If we get him back right after the All-Star break, I think we'd feel really good about it."

"If they say my hand is good on Friday, [then] maybe Saturday or Sunday or Monday, start swinging the bat," Soriano said. "Maybe 10 swings, 20 swings, just to do something with my hands."

Soriano is targeting a return before the All-Star Game. He repeated a motivation to play in the Midsummer Classic at Yankee Stadium, his home ballpark from 1999-2003.

"If he's going to be ready afterward, [playing in] the All-Star Game would be fine, too," said Piniella, who added that Soriano will need a Minor League rehab assignment. "Now, if we're going to have to rush him to get him back for the All-Star Game, that's a different story."

With Edmonds hitting like he is, and Soriano coming back, this lineup is going to be absurd.

Fukudome

Lee

Ramirez

Babe Ruth

Soto

DeRosa

i'd love Soriano to go to the All-Star game, take one at-bat and then get pulled from the game. He got the votes, let him get his glory. Better than some less-deserving guy to get in due to injury

Isn't Soriano a less-deserving guy due to his injuries?
