funny how Sulley didn't mention the blown goal-tending call OR the blown shot clock violation OR the non-call when Illinois was still in their backcourt with 23 seconds on the shot clock.

That said, nice to see PSU make up for those calls and that Battle made the game winner despite a terrible shooting night. I only saw the second half, but it was a bizarrely officiated game; both teams were beating the hell out of each other down low, but they were calling ticky-tack fouls left and right. Strange.

Battle was completely exhausted by the end there. If PSU/Illinois is a rematch in the BTT, Illinois is at a HUGE advantage: they'll have 8 days off (while PSU still has a road game Sunday). Battle can't play this many minutes 3 days in a row in the BTT and expect to be productive.

I'm really afraid of a let down game @Iowa now.

The officiating was dog crap both ways all night. The out of bounds where Davis kicked it and UI got the ball, the traveling calls on Tisdale when he was getting mugged, and just generally very inconsistent on calling fouls all night. I thought the tending call was ok, UI got nailed for a worse one against MSU last Sunday.

I just hope MSU beats Purdue this weekend so we don't have to play Sparty before the finals if we can get that far. A trip to the finals will help seeding, although I never really think getting a 4 or 5 seed is that great of a deal. I'd almost rather be a 6 because all the teams after about the top 6-7 are pretty equal and don't really scare me all that much.

Those particularly p'ed me off, every time he got the ball in the post he was literally pushed into a travel of course, with he gains more bulk and strength that won't happen.

everyone was getting mugged in the paint. Battle got bumped 2 or 3 times on his way to the game winning basket. There were moving picks all over the place. I'm surprised they called any fouls at all.

And I know you guys want to make yourselves feel better by saying PSU will suck again next year, but Cornley is the only important player graduating, and there a couple of decent big men coming in next year. Will they be in the top 4 in the conference again? No. But I don't think they'll plummet to last place again. The conference will be decided by freshmen next year, as most of the key players throughout the Big 10 are underclassmen.

I'm mostly frustrated this morning because that's now the fourth game this year that Illinois was in control at least midway through the second half (8-10 point lead) and then proceeded to eat clock and take bad jumpshots, which let the other team back in the game. Twice against PSU, the game at MSU, and the game at Michigan. It's balanced out somewhat by that ridiculous Northwestern comeback (which was caused by the exact same stupid "clock eating offense"), but at some point you have to just run the offense that got you the lead.

I will say one thing about Big Ten officiating that annoys me to no end: the "let them play underneath" mantra that causes them to eat their whistles for all but the most egregious contact down low really hurts the conference come tourney time, when games are called much tighter. It's stupid, and it lulls teams into a false sense that they can just destroy anyone underneath without recourse.

The Pac-10 is the complete opposite. The refs call so many touch fouls that teams that rely on FTs get in trouble come tourney time when those calls aren't made.

I don't believe PSU will suck, I believe Illinois will be much improved over this year, Tisdale and Davis with more bulk and strength just might form the best front court tandem in the B10. McCamey will improve, and the non-factor Legion will become a factor.

Probably. I think PSU will drop in the standings next year less because they will suck and more because the rest of the league will be better.

the non-call when Illinois was still in their backcourt with 23 seconds on the shot clock.

they called time out with 31 seconds. it's ten seconds to get across half court from when the ball is inbounded, not 10 seconds from the 35 seconds when the possession began.

Is that rule different in the NBA then? I swear I've seen basketball games where teams take a timeout in the back court and the announcers say "they need to remember that they only have X seconds to cross mid court once they inbound it".

I believe that this is true that in the NBA the count does not reset because of a timeout while in college it does.

the non-factor Legion will become a factor.

What has he done in the last 2 years to make you so sure?

I'm not saying he can't, I just see no reason to believe it's a near certainty.

He'll be eligible from the start of the season, no mid-December start, along with another year of being exposed to Weber' system. If he's ever to become a factor it's going to be next season, it's not a near certainty but, if Legion has Pro expectations the clock's ticking.

I imagine he struggles to play over Paul and Richardson.

PSU will be the 2 seed when it's all said and done. We'll beat them in the tourney, but I really can't believe this.

hypothetically, how far could PSU drop if they lose tomorrow? back into a Thursday game?

Apparently Johnny Dawkins isn't the head coach of Stanford men's basketball - he's the Anne and Tony Joseph Director of Men's Basketball at Stanford (link).

Anyways, go UCLA and go WSU tomorrow.

purdue @ michigan st

indiana @ wisconsin

penn st @ iowa

michigan @ minnesota

northwestern @ ohio st

i'd say that ohio st, minnesota and michigan st are likely to win, wisconsin will win. so if those things happen and penn st loses, here are the standings:

michigan st 15-3

purdue 11-7

indiana 11-7

penn st 10-8

wisconsin 10-8

minnesota 10-8

ohio st 10-8

northwestern 8-10

michigan 8-10

iowa 5-13

indiana 1-17

i don't know any way to break a 4-way tie other than put those teams' records against each other together and do it that way. if so, it'd be:

penn st: 2 losses to wisconsin, 1 loss to ohio st, split with minnesota (1-4)

ohio st: split with minnesota, beat penn st, lost to wisconsin (2-2)

wisconsin: 2 losses to minnesota, 2 wins over penn st, 1 win over ohio st (3-2)

minnesota: 2 wins over wisconsin, split with penn st, split with ohio st (4-2)

so my GUESS is that you'd have the seeding go:

1. mich st

2. illinois

3. purdue

4. minnesota

5. wisconsin

6. ohio st

7. penn st

8. michigan

9. northwestern

10. iowa

11. indiana

which would mean penn st played iowa again, ohio st got the gimme win over indiana and northwestern played michigan. then the second round game for penn st (if they beat iowa) would be against illinois.

B. Multiple team tie:

1. Results of head-to-head competition during the regular-season. a. When comparing records against the tied teams, the team with the higher winning percentage shall prevail, even if the number of games played against the team or group are unequal (i.e., 2-0 is better than 3-1, but 2-0 is not better than 1-0).

b. After the top team among the tied teams is determined, the second team is ranked by its record among the original tied teams, not the head-to-head record vs. the remaining team(s).

2. If the remaining teams are still tied, then each tied team's record shall be compared to the team occupying the highest position in the final regular-season standings, continuing down through the standings until one team gains an advantage.

a. When arriving at another pair of tied teams while comparing records, use each team's record against the collective tied teams as a group (prior to their own tie-breaking procedures), rather than the performance against the individual tied teams.

b. When comparing records against a single team or group of teams, the higher winning percentage shall prevail, even if the number of games played against the team or group are unequal (i.e., 2-0 is better than 3-1, but 2-0 is not better than 1-0).

3. Won-loss percentage of Division I opponents.

4. Coin toss conducted by Commissioner or designee.

so i think the way i laid it out was right.

needless to say, given that the other 9-8 teams are likey to win this weekend, the game at iowa is very important both for seeding in the big ten tourney, and for chances of getting into the field of 64 (65).

I don't really have anything against Penn State basketball but it would be kind of fun to beat them twice in a row and possibly destroy their season.

At least it would make up for the anger and outrage that resulted from our blown 13 point lead with 6 minutes to play, back when I thought we may be able to fight for the middle of the league.

Sick ending to the Creighton-Wichita State game. Wichita State came back from 20 down in the 2nd to take a 1 pt lead, but Creighton hit a 15 footer off an inbounds play at the buzzer. Losing there probably kills their at large chances. In other news, Cornell clinches the Ivy and the first auto bid of the year.

And Indiana has a win over a tournament team!
