If recollection serves Lewin worked all the out of town games in '97. It seems reasonable that Caray could have made exceptions for the STL (friends) and ATL (family) trips, but I don't think he would have made the effort for Cleveland.

i really want this to happen in a modern major league game, just to see some d-bag like jay mariotti or skip bayless cry and [expletive] their pants on national tv.

david ortiz does this [expletive] all the time. obviously not quite as theatrical, but close.

I want Baez to be good enough to do this, and then do this.

Nolan Ryan was only an All-Star 8 times. I know that's a ton, but in a 27 year career I figured he would have had more, him being a name and all that.

Also a little odd that he won just as many cy young awards as I did

He was in the Top 5 in voting five different times. I just looked it up and Roy Oswalt also has five Top 5 finishes without a win as does Jack Morris. FWIW Zambrano did that three times. Andy Pettite had four Top 5 finishes. In my five minutes of messing around on B-R with all of this, the most Top 5 finishes without a win is Mike Mussina who had six.

In my research it looks like Schilling has the most times as a runner up without a win at three times.

one of jack morris' top 5 cy young award years, he had an ERA over 4 and an ERA+ of 101. but he won 21 games!!!

Yuck.

FWIW, if he were in the HOF, the only pitcher with a worse lifetime ERA+ (his was 105) would be Catfish Hunter (104).

Wasn't he on a lot of shitty teams that didn't win many games? I mean, wins back then obviously meant you were a really good pitcher.

that's true, but he also issued an absurd number of walks throughout much of his career. i don't think anybody really paid much attention to pitch counts back then, but the number of pitches he threw in some seasons must have been outrageous. in 1974 he started 41 games, threw 26 complete games and issued 202 walks. he faced 1392 batters that season, and 569 of those at bats ended in a walk or a strikeout, so you could assume that he had a lot of high-pitch plate appearances against. a rough guess of 4.2 pitches per batter faced would put ryan at about 6000 pitches thrown, which is about 2000 more pitches than anybody throws in a season these days. 150 pitch outings probably would have been pretty common for him.

I think Nolan Ryan was never considered a 'Great' pitcher while he was in his prime. He was well liked but never thought of in the same way as Seaver, Carlton and some others. I think it was his endurance to pitch into his late 40s that made him as loved as he was. He also pitched a no hitter on the day Henderson broke the SB record. It was widely thought that Henderson kind of behaved like a douche when he broke the record(not by me, I loved him). Ryan kicking the crap out of Robin Ventura also was well received. Late in his career he basically got the same media treatment that Cal Ripken got most of his career. Similar to Derek Jeter now. I am not saying he wasn't great, but they would make you look really foolish trying to say something negative about him.
