99 Turk Wendell

Manny Ramirez wore 99 for three seasons.

Criteria to make the list was 10 seasons.

Yeah but Turk was bat [expletive] crazy awesome. That should count for life me 20 WAR.

Just realized that I have to change #3 Ruth to A-Rod! Ruth only wore the number for 7 years. A-Rod wore it for 10. So A-Rod is on the list twice amazingly.

How in the [expletive] am I just now realizing that he has already spent over 10 years with the Yankees?

Because, if you're like me, you haven't paid nearly as much attention to MLB the past few years while the Cubs have sucked so hard. That, and he's been injured/suspended a lot recently.

Large gallery of gifs featuring windups and swings of famous historical players:

Those are all pretty cool. The best is that the film isn't in the typical fast forward old film. Cy Young looks like a big lanky/angular pitcher. Mel Ott drops his hands way low when swinging.

A-Rod is starting his 22nd year in the majors. Holy crap. I guess maybe his 21st after sitting out last yr, but still...

I'll dispute #3, as that would exclude Babe Ruth. Since uniform #'s did not happen until 1929, the Babe's career had peaked by then.

Also no one would say Albert Pujols is even in the same conversation as Joe DiMaggio#5.

I posted this in the random musings but it should probably go here..

Cubs fans looking for a good trivia question.. bet this would stump most of you, including me before today.

Without looking I challenge you to put your answer in the Spoiler.

Who has the Cubs record for highest WAR in a season with the Cubs and highest batting average single season (Modern ERA)?

Roger Hornsby..

So today I learned.. Roger Hornsby wasn't an old has been with the Cubs. I knew he played for the Cubs but always felt he was just another old guy way past his prime for the Cubs.

In 1929 he hit .380, .459 OBP, .679 SLG, 1.139 OPS, 178 OPS+, with 39 homers, 8 triples, 156 Runs, and 149 RBI's while winning the NL MVP on a Cubs team that won the pennant.

His WAR was 10.4 best in the majors, by comparison Ruth was 8.0 for 2nd best that year.

They also had Hack Wilson in the lineup that year hitting 39 HR's and 159 RBI's with a .345 batting average..

The next year Hack Wilson hit his famous 191 RBI's, Hornsby was hitting .325 and broke his ankle (out for year).. he was never the same after that...

some players who were most frequently robbed of MVP awards:

willie mays: led the national league in WAR 9 times, finished 2nd twice, 3rd once, 4th once; won the MVP only twice. in 1964 he posted an 11.1 bWAR and lost to ken boyer of the cardinals, who wasn't even in the top 10 in bWAR. in the 13 years from 1954 to 1966, he was in the top 4 in national league WAR every season - his worst season was either 1956, when he had a 7.6 bWAR (2nd in the NL) and a batting line of .296/.369/.557, or 1959, when he had a 7.8 bWAR (4th in the NL) and a batting line of .313/.381/.583.

ted williams: led the AL in bWAR 8 times, finished 2nd once, 3rd 6 times; won the MVP only twice. finished runner up in MVP voting in seasons with a batting line of .356/.499/.648 and .406/.553/.735. had a batting line of .388/.526/.731 at age 38.

babe ruth, led the AL in bWAR 10 times - but only won once because of a stupid rule that previous winners were ineligible.

rogers hornsby, led the NL in bWAR 11 times - but the MVP (formerly the chalmers award) was dropped the year that hornsby came into MLB, and didn't come back to the NL until a decade into his career. he did lead the national league in 5 of 6 years (1924-1929) that the League Award was presented, but only won it twice.

Springboarding off a discussion about Bryant already having more 4K and 4BB games than Tony Gwynn ever did, I had some fun on BR this morning going through Gwynn's game logs.

In 2,440 games, he only had 33 games where he K'd twice and went through five seasons where he never K'd twice.

Three Finger Brown. Looks a bit like Nomo's delivery sans the high arm stretch. Maybe Sutcliffe?
