I read on Rotoworld that Meche laughs off trade rumors to the Cubs and has a no-trade clause that he doesn't intend to waive.

I don't get that at all.

According to the Kansas City Star, because of his no-trade clause Gil Meche "just laughs at those rumors circulating regarding a possible trade sending him to the Chicago Cubs."

The rumor in question was started by Peter Gammons of ESPN. "How's that going to happen?" Meche said. Meche indicated that he hasn't been asked to waive his no-trade clause and isn't interested in doing so.

This is the full statement, you are referring to. He's not laughing at a trade to the Cubs, he's laughing off the swirling rumors of a potential trade. It's clear he hasn't been asked to waive his NTC. Because I would find it hard to believe that Gil Meche, a guy a one time All-Star with a career 4.50era/1.41Whip would turn down a trade to division leader. But I doubt that's true, considering he once considered signing with the Cubs.

With that said, I'm not really in favor a pitcher (Meche), who according to baseballreference closly resembles both Ted Lilly and Jason Marquis in terms of career numbers. I thought the Cubs should get an upgrade, not another "like" pitcher. So, I hope the Cubs go for bigger fishes then Meche.

He had a very good offer from us (reportedly) and chose to sign with KC over us for a little more/longer. I don't know if you can really use what I bolded above to assert that he would have some interest in coming to us if he were asked. Either he's really about the little bit extra money KC gave him, or he was never really crazy about the idea of coming to us to begin with.

On the bright side its nice to see someone actually loves playing for the Royals in KC :?:

June 9 Sporting News says Sabathia will not be available.

I suspect they are right. I still believe Cubs fans are monumentally underestimating how hard it is to pick up a top-notch starter midseason.

You can't make a definitive statement about the trade deadline availability of a player like Sabathia on a team like the Indians in mid-June. It's pointless.

True. With the WC, teams will wait a little longer before deciding who or who not to deal. We'll have a better idea at the All-Star break, and even then it will be only a hazy picture.

What I don't get is why he wants Redding when it's quite possible he's worse than Marquis.

ANYONE WE DON'T HAVE MUST BE BETTER THAN WHAT WE HAVE

That's why we look at the numbers.

If it wasn't for the contract, I'd be interested to see if Rothschild could help Meche take that next step.

Is that the same step Rothschild took with Rich Hill? I didn't know Cub coaches posted here.

Yeah, it's still too early to make guesses like that. Once we hit July, maybe...

Yeah, Rothschild is 100% to blame for Hill not throwing strikes...

At least he's quicker to the plate now. That's the most important thing.

I'm just curious but, what about someone like Felix Hernandez? The Mariners are way back in the standings and don't seem to make a big push this season. With the names being thrown out there would it hurt to inquire?

It may not hurt to inquire, but the slap in the face might. He's the lone bright spot on the team and he's a young pitcher in just his 4th season. No way they trade him.

It was a shot in the dark anyway, just throwing it out there. They seem to have a number of problems so maybe a bunch of players going back would entice them since they do have Bedard that could take over the #1 spot. Granted, we probably don't have enough talent to start the conversation but he was a name I just thought of.

I doubt there is any chance they trade him. They'd probably ask for Zambrano in return.
