Bonus demands:

Kevin Goldstein (1:45:19 PM PT): Will. Melville asked for 10-15 money before the draft, and the further he goes, the further it looks like he'll get it. That makes UNC happy, especially after getting Matt Harvey last year. I like Bryan's scouting report on Dykstra more than Depos.

Melville, Hunt, Jake O, Kelly, Collier, and Gillaspie all around and 12 picks til the Cubs.

If Melville is still there at 41 (and if we take him), that'll make the Cashner pick a lot easier to swallow.

Chisenhall is a bit of a reach.

Indians better lock down everything in the locker room and office.

To my mind, the only way to cancel out the no-upside pick of Cashner was to grab Hewitt at 41... and now that's not an option.

He plays at Pitt CC which is about 3 miles down the road and I've never heard of him. Of course, Freddie Bynum went to Pitt CC and I didn't hear too much about him either 8-)

I think it is a little extreme to "LOVE" or "HATE" a pick at this point. They are all a relative unknown.

Its easy to throw around disgust about a pick, but a bit harder to give an actual reason for it.

I have an actual reason. Drafting relievers is going to give you very little upside, and still maintain a pretty high level of risk. Any team that drafts a reliever in the first is wasting their pick, unless they intend to start him.

Actually, it's pretty easy to have a reason to not like the selection of a college reliever in the first round, especially one that's as unpolished as Cashner is.

Don't know why Hunt is still here. A little control problem shouldn't drop you that much, he's still got plus fastball with a plus curve, potential for that curve to be plus plus IMO.

For OMC:

Kevin Goldstein (1:56:36 PM PT): parish4567 (hollywood): Now that its turned into a relief bonanza, how high do you see scott bittle go going -- and how can a guy have an 18K/9

Bittle has ridiculous numbers at Ole Miss, but he's kind of a trick pitcher. It's a mid-80s cutter, and it's an effective, but weird pitch -- and not the thing that's going to get him selected in the first round. More like 4th-6th.

I'm personally indifferent about the pick. I don't think it's as bad as some are making it out to be though.

Gotta be the Dave Littlefield Effect. Look who we took last year!

Thanks, Bruce.

Wilken said Cashner has put on 15-20 pounds from last year and that the Cubs would let time determine wither Cashner remains a reliever or goes to the bullpen in the minor leagues.

Do you mean remains a reliever or starts in the minors?

I fixed it to say remain a reliever or go to the starting rotation. Good edit on your part. I was trying to do too many things. Finally made it to Dodger Stadium a few minutes ago.
