Melville is really slipping. And I'm very pissed he made it past us.

Melville is going to Chapel Hill, imo. I'm pissed he's sliding to college and not Cole to Westwood.

Yeah, but we could pay him. Hell he is probably a better option than Jason Marquis right now and we are paying him big bucks.

Is there something wrong with Mellville that none of us knows about?

$$$ demands

College committment

I'm sure he'd have been picked by someone at this point if he was a sure sign.

Flaherty sounds like a guy that shouldve gone much later.

Not much later, BA ranked him #68.

I really hope that Odorizzi, Mehlville, or Collier drop to the Cards at 39

I'm typically negative towards the Cards drafting, but I don't see them spending 2.5 mil on a sandwich pick nor do I see them drafting a pitcher that high espec. at that price.

Yeah I am not that confident they would pick them either, but I am just hoping that since they are local guys maybe it would put some pressure on them to dish out a little cash.

I would expect a slotted college arm.

Mellville must be asking for Porcello money. I don't understand why the Cards took Lynn with DeVall still out there, and not having signability issues.

Top 10 money. And most teams didn't rate him that high to begin with.

Melville wants probably around 2.5 mil to 3.

I would have taken him and done that. Hell we signed Jeff S.

29 other teams have passed him up as well, they know better than I do.

Samardzija and Huseby's failure are possibly part of the reason we haven't seen many over-slot picks the last year and 2 picks.

Heck, if the Red Sox, Tigers and Yankees passed on him, maybe something's up.

Eh, everybody passing on a guy doesn't make it the right decision. Baseball has a way of groupthinking itself into stupid decisions.

Also, how much influence did Selig and MLB have on slotting this year?

Not much. The Red Sox and Yankees will go over slot with their first rounder. The Pittsburgh Freaking Pirates will go over slot with the 2nd pick and they now have the guy in charge of implementing slot working for htem.

Sure it does, if teams don't feel he is worth what he is asking, then they should pay simply b/c they can?

Baseball doesn't have a group think as far as going overslot, Selig would like for them to, but it doesn't occur.

He's asking for top 10 money and I'm guessing at least 95% of teams didn't have him in their top 10.

Kevin Goldstein (2:56:53 PM PT): My new crazy prediction. Angels get Melville with their first pick (No. 74 overall) and turn that selection into a first-round pick.

We shall see. He's still signable and the Angels love doing that too.
