he has also always been a very lucky pitcher

i don't trust him to be a 2 starter...maybe if he could develop one more pitch or possibly two...then the kid could be nasty...until then he walks a tightrope

are we all thinking of the same Rich Hill?

yes we are...i know he is beloved on here...but...i guess we will just have to agree to disagree

he's beloved because he was the best pitcher in the rotation for the last half of 2006 through the end of last year. ignoring that is foolish

I can't allow myself to believe that. There is no one else in the rotation who I would rather have on the mound for a big game than Zambrano. Case in point, Chris Young.

You don't like my ellipsis usage?

No, I enjoy it very much actually. What I don't enjoy is your refusal to accept that Hill is "beloved" because he was very good for a sustained about of time. He had sustained minor league success and after a brief hiccup upon being called up (and yanked around) to the majors he sustained very significant success for a year and a half.

Why you refuse to allow yourself to believe that is beyond me. The fact that you'd rather have Zambrano on the mound is inconsequential. I'd rather have Zambrano as well. And Chris Young has nothing to do with the discussion.

Yikes man. I know that hill is beloved because of his success. why else would he be beloved, he doesn't exactly exude charisma like dempster, Z, and others...he looks like a gawky stork when he is on the mound...i know he can pitch well...i have already said that...christ...i saw him do many many amazing things...but...i just don't see him as DOMINANT yet...i was hoping this would be the year...and then he crapped the bed...

jeez...i want badly for him to succeed... why in the hell wouldn't i? i pray for his little behind to get back up to the majors and have success because we are going to need him...

Maybe I'm applying this stat the wrong way, but wasn't Rich pretty lucky last year?

His BABIP was .280, and that was with him giving up a LD% of 21 percent. That seems like a low BABIP for such a high percentage of line-drives. I know his K rate helps out some, but it still seems weird to me.

Maybe a little bit, but part of that is that he gives up so few ground balls, and fly balls turn into outs most of the time.

Hill has also shown an ability in the majors to sustain a pretty low BABIP. It's the tradeoff for the fact that with so many fly balls hit, Hill's going to have more than an average number of homeruns hit against him.

~.300 is normal, so for a successful pitcher like Rich to be around .280 isn't that bad. As for the LD%, Rich gives up his share of HR, and like you mentioned K's a lot of guys, so that might be part of it, but I don't think he was a significant beneficiary of BABIP luck.

No, in fact this seems to be the only reason so many people hate him.

who hates him?

i have read people questioning his dominance here...but nothing verging on hatred...

i will admit though that i would love to see a little bit of passion from the guy...i saw some from lilly the other night...that was nice to see...i used to think he was a robot last year until he slammed his glove in the NLDS

what the hell does passion have to do with being a good major league starting pitcher?

um...i think everything...if you don't have passion for the game...why would you be playing it?

don't get me wrong...i know hill has passion...but he is also a perfectionist...who could probably just use a good yell...maybe he should go see that person that lennon saw before he wrote "mother"

Seriously, this is ridiculous. The guy does not need to act like Zambrano or Lilly to be a good pitcher. But remember, the first time he showed any personality he was chastised by his manager and told to shut up and let the big boys talk it out.

wow...you guys couldn't tell that the last part about lennon was a joke?

I could tell the Lennon part was a joke, but I could also tell the part about needing to show emotion was serious.

he doesn't need to...but it would be nice to see sometimes...it isn't an end all be all situation though...

so...i stopped watching sports (and baseball in particular) after the marlins beat the indians in what was that 97? anyway...the part about hill being told to shut up by the manager...when did that happen...i started paying attention to ball again during the very tail end of 06...

Not only was he told to shut up by management, he was demoted shortly afterwards to "work on his attitude".

Whatever the case, and whoever is to blame, Hill needs to step it the hell up. Yes, he's in AAA. Yes I'm sure that hurt his confidence, but he needs to start throwing strikes and get his act together because this team needs him.

If he can't then we're going to be forced to trade for someone like CC and I'm sure we'll overpay.

Hill doesn't get the same leeway, since he didn't learn how to pitch, apparently, until he was 25 years old.

ugh...That doesn't even make sense. Why would it even matter if he didn't learn how to pitch until he was 25? He was great last year. Hasn't he earned the right to have more than five starts to prove himself?

Because he doesn't have the history to back up his success. If you have a guy who's been successful for 5-6 years, you have a lot more faith he can keep it up (like Sabathia). Hill was a pretty middling prospect until he turned 25.

You're the one who compared him to Sabathia. I said why that was a poor comparison.

if Greg Maddux had only shown some emotion and charisma he'd be a hall of famer

Dude, has Rich Hill ever farted in a teammate's face?

That's what shows Maddux's inner fire.

Man that article makes me angry. Dusty sucks as a manager in every possible way.

Notwithstanding the fact that Hill could probably fit in one of Sabathia's pant legs...
