Len better be wrong about that. Don't you dare use Marmol for the 9th, Lou. Use Eyre and bring in Woody if he gets into trouble.

I'd like to see someone compile a list of Wuertz's performances and what the situations were (winning or losing, by how many, and what inning). I'd be willing to bet there is a noticable difference in performance based on game situation, and not in a good way.

He's given up 9 earned runs this year, five of them in two games where he recorded no outs. We won both of those games. He hasn't given up multiple runs in any other game this year. In fact, we've only lost one game this year in which he gave up a run(s), the 5-4 loss to Pittsburgh on May 24.

Len and Bob having an awkward surfing conversation:

Len: Are you going to go surfing out here on the west coast?

Bob: Seeing as how I've never done it in my life....no.

Len: I'm going to go everyday, I went today.

At least he didn't have to throw many pitches.

Yet...I'm not completely convinced he won't pitch the 9th.

Although as I think about it more, he probably won't. If Lou was trying to save him from pitching the 8th, he probably won't want him to pitch in the 9th.

And part of Marmol's high innings total has been just his unbelievable effectiveness. He has had a similar number of appearances to other Cubs relievers (30 for Marmol, 29 for Wood, 28 for Howry, 27 for Wuertz) but Howry and Wuertz especially had some outings where they had to leave early due to ineffectiveness, and therefore don't have as many innings.

It's been a tough week for resting Marmol. lots of wins (and Marmol is used a lot more in leads then trailing), lots of close games, and starters who have taxed the bullpen. I'm worried about his total workload, but I can't really point to a series of days where he has been really overworked. It's just that he is rarely underworked in any week, and therefore the innings are piling up.

A) I'm talking aout career numbers, not a 2 month sample size

B) The numbers you just gave me are not very telling since they don't account for situations like tonight. He didn't give up a run but he clearly was not good.

Wuertz is so bad he hurts the Cubs not only in this game but in future games.

you realize he has a 148 ERA+ coming into tonight, right?

Don't bother. Wuertz is the poster boy for the "but he looks bad to me" train of thought.

Drives me insane.

Lou's ADD needs to be treated. Wuertz woulda been fine if he just let him friggin pitch. Additionally(sorry if it was addressed) there was no reason to yank Lieber after only 1, nor is there any reason to use Marmol at all.(It appears he was pitching the 9th regardless which is mind-numbing, considering he was looking at a potential 4 run lead in the 9th) I really think that effin 6 run lead evaporation against the Rockies last year(WHICH WE WOUND UP WINNING LOU) makes him afraid of using anyone but our 2 best in 4 run leads in the 9th.
