Arizona Phil: EXST Giants drub EXST Cubs

  • Pina, Nunez and Hempy struggle on the mound.
  • Nelson Perez hit a 3-run HR.
  • Oneri Fleita is coming to Mesa over the weekend, presumably to start determining who gets to go to Boise or even Peoria.

Granted anything is better than 9+ ERAs and 1 BB/IP that he was doing the last few times out but that definitely is a step in the right direction.

Geez, Ryno got ejected again?

Well, so much for the two day streak of our farm teams going undefeated.
Fortunately the streak of winning at the top of the organizational ladder continues.

Geez, Ryno got ejected again?

My goodness, that Sandberg is a piece of work. Constantly arguing with umpires and getting ejected. He is so disrespectful. Minor league umpires hardly make any money. They're just the common working man and they have to deal with this jerk of a millionaire who never gives to charity and thinks his stuff don't stink.

I hope this arrogant, pompous, creep never manages in the bigs. Anyone who disrespects minor league umpires should be fired. The minor leagues are all about helping the kids become major leaguers. Then again, he never cared about his own kids - why should he care about others. Silly me.

Barry Bonds is an ANGEL compared to Sandberg the horrible.

Peoria Journal Star[/url]"]Wednesday night’s series-opener between the Peoria Chiefs and Cedar Rapids Kernels meandered through six fairly uninteresting innings.

All the runs had already scored in the Kernels’ 5-3 win when Chiefs catcher Josh Donaldson, manager Ryne Sandberg and plate umpire Tony Gutierrez added some sparks in the seventh.

With Jay Brossman at the plate, Donaldson argued after Gutierrez called a pitch through the heart of the plate a ball.

Gutierrez first ejected Donaldson, which brought Sandberg from the Chiefs first-base dugout.

“I went out to protect my player,” Sandberg said.

The argument seemed civil, if tense, at first. But Gutierrez ejected the manager.

“I asked where the pitch was and he wouldn’t answer me,” Sandberg said. “I asked again where the pitch was at. He said a ball and then he had some choice words for me for coming out there.

“I was protecting my player after he just kicked him out.”

Towering over Gutierrez, the 6-foot-2 Sandberg then came close to bumping the umpire and before he departed kicked dirt on the umpire’s shoes.

“That’s great to have a manager that will stand up for his players,” Donaldson said. “I feel that I wasn’t in the wrong. After we came in and talked about it, he was perfectly fine with that.”

Defending his players with the men in blue is nothing new to Sandberg. It was Sandberg’s fourth ejection of the season, and second at home, this year. He was also ejected four times last year.

Donaldson was called out on strikes in the bottom of the sixth inning and appeared to say something to Gutierrez. The umpire also called Dylan Johnston out on strikes to end the fourth, which drew a comment from Peoria’s right fielder.

THe umpiring in this league is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO flipping bad im actually surprised he doesn't get ejected more often. There are times with these guys behind the plate that I almost wish i could get sent away so I ddint have to watch them call the same pitches balls an inning after they call the pitch a strike. I think they guve umpiring degrees out in Cracker Jacks boxes these days...

Totally agree with Nate. Think that Donaldson's issue last night was the inconsistency of the umping. The called strike against him in the 4th was, as Mr Mac said, "ankle high" Tough call to be sure. Then, think that the pitch that our guy threw was much better and got called a ball.

It's really tough to preach plate discipline when your guys get called out for sticking with the program.

Also, not sure if this was the same crew that we've had problems with earlier this year, but yikes, that was bad. The fact that the ump had to have been about 5'5" to Sandberg's 6'2" was the best part. Sandberg was just towering over the guy like, "you little pipsqueak..." You would think that the umps would have a little more respect & professionalism than to use foul language though...Sandberg was *very* cool and collected and only went off after something the ump said.
