RHP Dumas Garcia and LHP Darrin Downs were promoted from Daytona to Tennessee while RHPs Rocky Roquet and Jesse Estrada were demoted from Tennessee to Daytona. Garcia was fantastic at Daytona though he's a bit old at 24.

Iowa: LHP Sean Marshall (at AAA: 0-0, 1.50 ERA, 12 IP, 11 K/4 BB, .150 BAA)

With the Cubs offday today, the next time Gallagher's spot comes up will coincide with Marshall's regular rest. If he can go an effective 5+ today, I would think they'd strongly consider going to him next.

I'd still like to see them experiment with the duel starter thing, let Gallagher and Marshall go 3-4 each in the same game, see how that works. The problem for each seems to be the 2nd/3rd time through, and endurance.

That's actually not a bad idea. Marshall's OPS against went up about 300 points after 75 pitches last year. He averaged under 5 1/3 innings per start. I do admit though, I hate the idea of being locked into a set routine before the game even unfolds. On one hand, it could be an extra day off for your bullpen. On the other, you let the other team know what's coming and when. You don't know on a given day if Marshall or Gallagher can go 7 strong.

You don't have to make it a set time, and if a guy is cruising, you can choose to stick with him. Depending on the lineup (lots of lefties early, or RH dominant) you can choose which one to actually start, and then let him go as long as he's shutting them down. Of course this isn't condusive to "letting a guy learn how to get out of jams", but I think it's a decent idea to try and get young pitchers adjusted to the game. Eventually one of them may prove to be better going longer, and you can adjust. It doesn't have to be a season long thing.

I've gotta think a strong outing for Marshall gets him the start against the Dodgers on Tuesday

Everything that Lou has said leading up to last night would indicate so.

Arizona Phil: One Angel throws "live" BP, others drop "live" game:

  • Gooz looks good in live BP session (65% strikes), topped out at 94 mph).
  • Vitters came in as a defensive replacement and made a throwing error. He still has some pain when he swings the bat.
  • Kyler Burke, Junior Lake and Jose Made had good games with the bat. Dwayne Kemp had two doubles that each nearly cleared the fence.
  • Cubs committed 5 errors.

Apparently, nobody wants to be in the Cubs rotation. Sean Marshall gives up back-to-back singles to start the game, then gives up a RBI single on a 3-0 pitch, and a first pitch, 2 run triple. 4-0 after a fielders choice and 2 ground outs.

1 inning, 4 hits, 4 ERs, 0 BBs, 1 K for Marshall on 27 pitches, 17 strikes

Good news is Felix Pie singled to RF in his 1st AB.

From the recap of Sean Marshall's start:

Omaha Bottom 4th

* Angel Berroa singles on a line drive to left fielder Matt Murton.

* Damon Hollins flies out to left fielder Matt Murton.

* Damaso Espino grounds out, pitcher Sean Marshall to first baseman Jason Dubois. Angel Berroa to 2nd.

* Dave Matranga singles on a ground ball to left fielder Matt Murton. Angel Berroa scores.

* Injury Delay.

* Pitcher Change: Mike Burns replaces Sean Marshall.

* Mitch Maier flies out to left fielder Matt Murton.

3.2 IPs, 61 pitches, I don't see any info on what type of injury it was.

David Price made his pro debut today. 5 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K. Not shabby.

He is going to be a good one.

Who has a better career? The 2006 Top College Pitcher Andrew Miller or the 2007 Top College Pitcher David Price?

I would say Price. I think MIller has been rushed and it may effect his entire career.

 at AZPhil calling him the "mighty mite".

Well, it's nice to have someone in this system who can hit for power and does so during games!
