I know the Cubs didn't know who they were picking in the Rule V for Cincinnati, but my god did Cincy fleece us. There couldn't be a more perfect fit for the Cubs right now...although he would have had 2 bad weeks last year and been sent to AAA.

However, imagine this    :

Soriano

Fukudome

Lee

Ramirez

Hamilton

Soto

DeRosa

Theriot

Yeah, it's a crying shame that the Cubs spent all those years developing Hamilton only to have the Reds swoop in and steal him from them.

EDIT: And in what way is this a transaction?

This also reminds me of the time the Cubs gave away Tim Lincecum for nothing in 2003, practically handing him to the Giants without any form of compensation. Wouldn't he look good on the Cubs this year.

Last I checked the Rule V draft was a transaction.

EDIT: So was the $50K being traded to the Cubs for giving Cincy the right to pick first.

Ok, it is the result of a transaction two years ago.

We never really had him. He was one of those late round picks who never signed, like Khalil Greene. He also was drafted late by the Indians in '05. Im sure theyd love him too.

For the last time, it was previously worked out that the Cubs would draft a player for the Reds and trade/sell him to Cincy. There never was a possibility of us keeping him.

The first sentence is correct, the second is wrong. There was always a possibility of us keeping him. They could have drafted him in the first place without any deal with Cincy.

You mean like how it says in the first sentence of the thread?

So... bringing this to a present-day transaction discussion... what would it take to get Hamilton from Texas? Pie + some combination of pitching prospects? or would it be impossible to pry him away from the Rangers at this point?

I'm thinking Hill + Pie + Cedeno + Marmol.

Seriously. He's making no money and they just gave up Edinson Volquez for him and he's pretty much putting up MVP numbers.

Nothing is impossible, but I suspect that this would be an extremely heavy lift.

They gave up a very good pitching prospect for him. I'm guessing it would take much more than that to convince them to trade.

Between Hill, Pi, Cedeno, and Marmol, 1 of the 4 is absolutely untouchable. Go on, guess which.

As for Hamilton, Im sure hes aquireable. I know hes making like league minimum, but with a team like the Rangers, who are in a constant rebuilding phase, theyd always be willing to work something out. It would cost us, but its not out of the question.

Teams rebuild with cheap productivity. Hamilton IS cheap productivity. Sure, nobody is untouchable, but the sheer amount a team would have to overpay to get cheap productivity away from a rebuilding team makes any reasonable possibility of a trade not worth it.

The Cubs are huge idiots for not drafting a guy that had 50 ABs (At low A) over the previous 4 seasons.

IDIOTS!!

Or you could look at it as the Cubs are huge idiots for not drafting a guy that was the consensus #1 pick a few years back and one of the top 15 HS hitting prospects in the history of the game.

Taking a longshot flyer on a guy like Hamilton was completely incompatible with all of the other win-now moves the Cubs made last fall (hiring Piniella, signing Soriano Lilly DeRosa etc.). There was no way they could try and contend while committing a roster spot to a complete unknown.

I don't understand why people can't get that and just move on.

The Reds took the chance because they were in a position where they could afford to, and they hit the jackpot. Nice for them.

A lot of fans still talk about Lou Brock and you honestly think this one will be let go if Hamilton has a really good career? I agree, the Reds out manuvered (sp) the Cubs but the better Hamilton and even the pitcher the Reds got for him, unfortunately, this may be talked about for many years.

It should be let go, for the reasons mentioned.

The Reds "outmaneuvered" the Cubs by assembling an also-ran caliber roster, instead of a contending-caliber roster?

The Reds could afford to take a chance on Hamilton only because their expectations for 2007 were low (and those low expectations were justified when they finished 18 games below .500). Their suckitude created this opportunity. That's not exactly praiseworthy.

But if there getting several players that will help them in the future for one guy who will be well out of there price range when hes due for a contract if he keeps it up, surely theyd have some interest.
