I suppose there are worse things that could happen....

Dusty Baker could buy the Cubs and name himself manager and GM for life.

Derrek Lee could spontaneously combust.

Aliens could mindswap Kosuke Fukudome and Randall Simon

Wrigley Field could be renamed Viagra field

If such a swap granted us the image of Fukudome taking a bat to one of the Milwaukee sausages with the might and grace of a samurai warrior, I would support it on a temporary basis.

This is true. Randall really knew how to beat a sausage.

but now we have Edmonds for that

I was cheering as Fukudome walked today, and I was about to shout encouragement to the next batter in the lineup. I experienced a Fonzie-like verbal block upon realizing who was next: "Let's go Ed-- Edm-- Ed-- Edmo-- um... let's go, base hit here."

It's gonna take some time.

He isn't Barry Bonds?

You got your exercises backwards. In the "Say something positive about Barry Bonds" exercise, the right answer is "He isn't Jim Edmonds."

Obviously, if we're looking toward the future it's a different story.

okay...

sorry, but i've just made the argument so many times that i can't do it anymore. long story short, playing pie does not mean you're only "looking toward the future".

So, is it possible that Edmonds can manage to put up a ~.800 OPS hitting almost exclusively against righties and playing at Wrigley for half his games (say the wind blows out a bit and he gets a few extra HR like he would've yesterday had the wind not been blowing in)?

I know it's unlikely, but it doesn't seem totally out of the question. If he manages to do that, how happy would people be with having added that kind of production to the lineup for the short term, possibly (but not necessarily, for numerous reasons that have been discussed already) at the expense of Lix's development?

I have to say, if he can manage to be moderately successful like that, it would be a big boost to a lineup that has been one of the best in baseball with what basically has amounted to a black hole in CF.

I think it's within reason to believe he can do it if he's healthy and stays that way. he's terrible when he's gimpy

It's possible. Unlikely, but possible. Felix possibly could have done the same thing playing against RHP only.

The most positive thing about Edmonds is that it might help the Iowa Cubs to win their division?

I'm really tryin' here.

Just for the sake of discussion, short-term, which one (Pie vs. Edmonds) was more likely, this year?

Personally, I'm really not sure. The fact that Edmonds has a proven track record doesn't necessarily mean all that much given what he is today, but by the same token, I have a hard time seeing Pie doing it because I have yet to see him do it.

This shouldn't be seen as a reflection of my feelings on the Pie situation at all. I'm definitely for Pie getting 100% of the PAs against righties. I'm just bringing it up for the sake of discussion as far as which might be the better option taking this year only into account.

I see both of them this season as being 725-750 OPS guys with a ceiling around 800. factor in what I perceive to be better defense from Pie, and I think we have a winner

Edmonds went from his 1.061 OPS in 2004 to .918, .821, .728, and this year's .500(104 PAs). It's been a steady decline, and I think a .750 is being pretty optomistic

If I were a Cards fan, I wouldn't be mad about the Edmonds signing... I'd be giddy that a hated rival will be starting a washed-up, old player.

In any event, one positive I can say about Edmonds is that he wasn't the idiot who almost caused a multi-car wreck ahead of me on the freeway today...at least I'm pretty sure it wasn't him

Something positive about Edmonds: Pie is finally a full-time starter.

Too bad it's in AAA instead of the majors. :(
