Pie went 1-3 with a walk last night. That's a 833 OPS. The average 8 spot hitter in the NL is OPSing 642, just slightly better than what Pie has done this year. There are 7 teams in the NL getting less OPS than what Pie has done this year. The Cubs offense has been pretty darn good, their defense has been spotty at best.

It's mindboggling why Pie has become such a target of hate and blame by Lou. He's singled out like the most incompetent baseball player to ever step on the field. He's been bad, but over an extremely short period of time. And his replacement has been worse against RHP (the most common type of pitcher).

There's really no justification or defense for the idiocy that would be needed to even contemplate this move.

I don't know what's up with this. Maybe partly Johnson's hot start and Pie's slow one but hopefully Lou will figure it out that Pie has a left bat and can play the game.

So am I missing something, or if Pie goes down would the Cubs not have any reserve outfielders? Ward can barely play a corner outfield position when healthy and DeRosa can play out there on occasion, but nobody can play CF. I like Reed Johnson as a reserve and part-time starter, but his numbers are coming back to reality and he isn't doing anything right now that Pie can't do. With that aside, I still fail to understand the logic of carrying 13 pitchers.

Cedeno is working out in CF again, apparently.

NO chance even Lou is idiotic enough to go with 13 pitchers. 12 is already excessive and the bench is alread thin. It will NOT get even worse. When Eyre returns Fox is gone.

I'm hoping when Eyre returns, Marquis is DFA with either Marshall or Gallagher stepping into the rotation.

hahahahaha there is way more chance of us going with 13 pitchers than dumping marquis and inserting marshall/gallagher in the rotation

what would jebus do?

That scares, the you know, out of me.

Lou has to stop wasting hitters and the relievers have to improve. I do not like the idea of a 13 pitcher roster but with the roster they have he shouldn't have to pinch hit that often, other than the pitchers and not Z or Marquis.

Dumb question - rather than sending someone to Iowa, could a trade be made instead? One of the trades for a player to be named later, or for cash consideration? Or does it have to be a demotion if a player is brought up?

Yes, a trade can be made instead of a demotion. The last one I can remember for the Cubs is when they traded Izturis for a PTBNL and brought up Fox to the major league club at the same time last July.

I don't really see any Cub on the current roster getting traded in early May, though.

Thanks. I wasn't sure how that worked.
