People have spoken that this will be a battle of Zell's guy (Cuban) vs. Selig and MLB's guy (Canning) and my $ is on Zell, beacuse he just don't give a crap and will raise hell publicly.

Agreed. Zell *needs* to wring every last dollar out of this. MLB would just prefer it to be their guy.

My concern is Selig using his slush fund to make up the difference. Zell doesn't give a crap where the money comes from, he just wants it. Selig's got loads of money from various MLB revenues to spend on dicking us over.

The current state of the market really tilts the playing field towards Cuban.

Really hard to get capital/credit right to make deals right now if you don't have the money already (like Cuban does).

Anybody have a link to this interview with Erin Andrews? I'm interested to hear what Cuban said and to see how Andrews looked.

no link but here's the highlights

-said he would get along fine with Selig

-said he gets along well with Stern in private, what the fans know is not the whole story

-doesn't need to make a lot of changes

-baseball is doing fine without him

Erin Andrews was glowing white hot. Too bad she kept asking NBA questions.

I'm not worried about him spending on payroll. He could spend the same amount we're spending now and I'd be fine. Here's what I want out of Cuban.

1) Not being content with putting a "crappy/mediocre/swept in the first round of the playoffs" team on field.

2) Put some young, fresh minds in the organization that think of things a little different than some of the "good baseball guys" do. You don't need to have every member of the front office be a SABR whiz, but a few wouldn't hurt. Balance stats and scouting.

1) See: Dallas Mavericks (Yes, I know he's not content with the first round exits, but it's become habitual)

2) I do have faith Cuban would help develop the statistical mindset throughout the organization.

Don't forget that Cuban has wanted some awful deals. The ridiculous Kidd trade and Bradley's salary come to mind. While he's better than the alternatives at this point, he's no genius.

Letting Steve Nash walk comes to mind.

Cuban would probably be the only owner that had fans making personalized jerseys of his name.

I know Cuban's name is as sexy as Elisha Cutbert's to Cubs fans at this point, and he's also my preferred choice, but I'm not convinced Canning would be a bad owner. He's a huge baseball fan, was a catcher in college, has an interest in baseball teams at several levels, and has tremendous resources to work with as well. Just because he is Selig's pal doesn't mean he should be dismissed outright.

I know everyone has their heart set on Cuban, but we shouldn't be to disappointed if Canning gets the nod.

After Cuban's firing of Avery I don't know if I want him to own this team.

NBA is completely different. Avery last year took the first seed in the playoffs last year and coached them to a first round exit. This year everyone again picked them in the first round and they still lost. Any owner would have fired Avery.

I want Cuban, but more importantly, I don't want the new owner with any direct ties to Bud Selig at all. No "cronies", no "friends from way back", blah, blah, blah. But my problem is...Jerry Reinsdorf is going to do his darndest to stay in Selig's ear about Cuban, and try to keep Mark out of MLB. That's my fear.

In addition, there was a lot of rumors that the Mavericks players had started to tune Avery out. Also, while Avery had the Mavericks playing well in the regular season, he was routinely out coached in the playoffs.

As someone who lives in Dallas and sees/hears this schmuck on a regular basis, I absolutely 100% don't want him as the owner. He is not much more than a snake oil salesman.

Yea, the way that franchise has totally flourished since he took over has been a complete mirage.

(Cue responses about not winning championships )

Forget winning championships. They had the best record in the NBA last year and choked in the first round. They barely made the playoffs this year and now they are about to blow up the whole team and start over. He threw a lot of money at a crappy franchise, got a city excited about basketball, built a stadium, and now charges astronomical prices to see a team play that can't win [expletive]. Why is everyone so enamored with this buffoon?

The Mavs weren't just a "bad franchise" when he took them over, they were a helpless franchise. So if we're going to attribute basketball moves to him, even though he was just the owner and not the general manager, then you can't just attribute the bad moves to him. You also got to give him credit for singlehandedly finding Josh Howard at the end of the 1st round. Or getting Steve Nash for nothing in a trade with Phoenix. Or drafting a future NBA MVP like Dirk Nowitski as a 19 year old in the draft after Jason Williams, Tractor Trailer and Larry Hughes. And could someone explain to me exactly how Cuban is responsible for the Mavs "choking" in the playoffs anymore than John Mara is responsible for David Tyree making an acrobatic catch in the Superbowl.

And if you followed the Mavs, you would also know that Avery Johnson is the Dusty Baker of basketball managers... without the people skills.

Show me where I said Cuban is solely responsible for the Mavs choke jobs. And if you don't think he plays a big part in trades and player acquisitions, then you are fooling yourself. I think the only place he doesn't input much is in the draft.

He very well may be, but if you really believe he is then you can't just selectively attribute the bad moves to Cuban and then attribute the good ones to someone else. If he's making personnel moves, then he must be doing something extremely right considering what the Mavs overall record has been since his arrival ... especially considering where it was before his arrival.

Forget winning championships. They had the best record in the NBA last year and choked in the first round.

If you're not attributing it to Cuban, why even bring it up in a topic about Cuban? It seems you certainly wanted to smear him with it because of your first personal vendetta, whether it was any of his fault or not.

I feel sorry for Mavs Fans. Cuban is going to sell off the Mavs and buy the Cubs, and as Mavs go back to being the punchline of the NBA they're going to realize how much they didn't appreciate what they had.

Cuban okayed Donnie Nelson getting Jason Kidd, and Avery Johnson refused to let the team play fast break basketball.

What makes everyone think that this would be THAT big of a deal to Reinsdorf? Sure he doesn't like him, but would it really be THAT big of a deal?

I used to be enamored with the idea of Cuban as owner of the Cubs, but ever since he backed that POS redacted, I have no respect whatsoever for him. I'd be happier to hear he fell down some stairs and broke his leg than I would be to hear he bought the Cubs.

Jesus, are you still on about that movie?
