I like Dusty, I think most of us did when they signed him.

I also think he changed the mindset of the "lovable losers".

I am sure there will be more boos then cheers.

But told tell me he ruined Wood and Prior.

He did not have a 2 man rotation and blew out their respective arms.

Zambrano seems to be ok....

We can argue about his managerial decisions in game 6 of the NLCS...beyond that I think Dusty is certainly not the worst manager the Cubs have had...

But stop blaming him for Wood and Prior...

I blame him more for 2005 and 2006.

...and 2004 in my opinion, Vance. He had that team focusing on so many things other than playing baseball down the stretch.

I was glad he landed on his feet, but I was extrememly glad he left. He probably stayed at least a half season too long if not more (I'm looking at you Jim Hendry) and that is what will probably contribute to the booing this week. Kind of like that person you dated just a little to long and in that time went from just not wanting to be with them to flat out hating them. Sorry to use that over-used analogy gang.

I love Dusty, I will definiately be cheering him. We would of had a Championship if he was still here.

would have...not would of.

Link.

And no, we would not have had a championship if he were still here. (subjunctive mood, please.)

In his defense, he was strapped with key injuries (that may or may not have been his fault). You can't ignore the # of pitches per game, the ridiculous lineups, and the fact that Dusty spent a couple of years begging Hendry to get him better talent on the field.

I think his undoing was his faith in vets, and his lack of faith in farm-hands. Dude.

End of '04. He finally "gets all his horses back" as he was so wont to use as an excuse. The stretch run. We've got a modest lead in the wild card, all the key players back -- ready to go.

What happens? Massive losing, out of the playoffs. That was the beginning of the end for Dusty, IMHO. After that, '05 and '06 seemed like a foregone conclusion.

I don't think I've ever disagreed more with a statement on this board.

If you mean solely the blame, I'll give you that. Baker has to take a lion's share of the blame though for overworking both Wood and Prior.

As for Game 6 and 2004, he gets all the blame - it was his ship and he didn't bring it in. Good riddance (now if someone will kick Hendry out the door...)

Wood had arm troubles before Dusty even got here. Dusty can only be blamed for not being smart enough to keep Wood from over pitching, but Woods arm was already messed up way before Dusty got here. Prior's injuries could have been do to Dusty's overworking him but it is really hard to say. He probably has been over pitched his whole life, way before he played professionally, and that itself could have taken a toll on his arm. I really can't blame a manager for pitching a guy once he gets to the majors, he's getting paid a lot to do it.

Dusty sucked a lot, for the way he handled his line ups, playing people out of position and for his overall stubbornness but to give him a lot of blame for Wood's and Prior's injury issues I think is unfair.

You're right. It was a coincidence that they were two of top pitchers in terms of pitcher abuse points under Dusty, that Dusty has a tendency to abuse young arms, and that their arms almost fell off.

Or not.

QFT.

Can we ever know with 100% certainty that it was Baker's fault, and Hendry's fault for allowing it? No. Of course not.

But the facts are simple:

Young pitchers who throw a lot of pitches are more likely to have injuries.

A very young Mark Prior threw more pitches per start than any other pitchers in baseball that season.

Injuries essentialy ended, and at the very least seriously derailed, Prior's career.

I didn't want Baker when he was hired. He was supposed to be a proven "winner," but his teams had a spectacular history of losing in the "clutch" situations. He had a reputation for pitcher abuse.

Then we went out and lost in clutch situations and abused pitchers.

between a few new people posting about this here and the link earlier in the thread, i can't help but think dusty has a street-team of some sort trying to do pro-baker revisionist history.

is dusty a bad person? no, he seems nice enough. is dusty a bad manager? yes.
