Wow 5K in 7 is that a record?

No, I'm pretty sure he's gotten 6 before (and in fewer innings).

Peoria wins in walk-off style in the bottom of the 9th! Marquez Smith hit a 3-run homer to tie the game and then Donaldson - who was the next batter - hit a homer to win it.

clevenger is 0-18 to start the season :x

he does have 5 walks against only 2 strikeouts, though.

sweet win for peoria... down 5-2 entering the 9th inning, here's how it went:

# Nate Samson hit by pitch.

# Dylan Johnston walks. Nate Samson to 2nd.

# Jonathan Mota strikes out swinging.

# Marquez Smith homers (1) on a fly ball to left field. Nate Samson scores. Dylan Johnston scores.

# Josh Donaldson homers (1) on a line drive to left field.

Samardz K'd a guy in the first inning. Then he mowed them down into the 6th. He then K'd the last out in the 6th and K'd the side in the 7th. So his last four outs were K's. 5th and 6th also had 3 flyouts, two line singles, and a walk.

4 popouts during the first four innings.

I think the GO/AO ratios can sometimes be a bit misleading for Samardz, becauase when he's going good he gets a lot of popouts.

He must have really been throwing strikes and getting some fast outs during his GB/pop-out innings. In only his second start his pitch count must be pretty low; to have gotten seen innings in under the early pitch counts is pretty extraordinary.

Perhaps his pitch count isn't quite as restrictive, since he was in camp with the major leaguers and started earlier than the true minor-leaguers, maybe. But I thought that the pitch counts are usually on the order of 75 pitches or so at this point. Nice start for Sammy.

Could this be the season Harvey puts it all together?

His buddy Dopirak is also doing pretty good this season. Through 7 games he's hitting .385/.484./.538/1.022 with 5BB/5K. He also played LF tonight and got an OF assist.

Sample size.

I'm definitely not getting my hopes up on Harvey. He'll probably rebound tomorrow with an 0/4 game where he strikes out 3 times.

I wish....Both Haarvey and Dopirak oozes talent, but right now, they don't ooze baseball intelligence. I'm actually counting down the days till the Cubs decide to end the Harvey as a "hitter" experiment, and move him to the mound, so he could explode like Carlos Marmol.

I know, I know it's a longshot, but where Cubs fans, and we're allowed to dream a little dream, aren't we?

I doubt Harvey is going to "explode like Marmol" on the mound.

I hate to do it w/Dopirak b/c he did seem like a great guy, but there were questions whether or not he had used stuff to enhance his game.

Just goes to show you steroids don't do jack with your plate discipline.

Frankly, if Harvey gets himself back on track this season, I can definitely see him really high on the list of prospects the Cubs would be happy to trade in a deadline deal. He can't play CF and the other two corner OFs on this team won't be going anywhere any time soon.

On the other hand, having some RH power would be welcome on the bench.

Wasn't it 2004 that saw a really bad hurricane season out in Daytona? I want to say that was the year Jackie Robinson Stadium got pretty badly damaged.

Yeah, that was 2004.

The hurricanes also affected the Cubs at the major league level. That was the year an entire series in Florida was rained out, resulting in the Cubs going without a day off much longer than normally allowed by the CBA. I've always felt, and still feel, that the Cubs just wore down by the last week of the season and that was a factor contributing to their blowing the wildcard.

Keep in mind Harvey still has struck out 9 times and has just 1 BB in 22 plate appearances this season. Ugly.

Quit destroying my hope for him. Flieta told me he had a tool you cannot teach!!!

yeah, how to hit the ball 500 feet in batting practice.

Tennessee wins 2-0. Samardzija's final line: 7 IP, 4 hits, 0 ER's, 5 K's/1 BB, 6 GO's/10 FO's.

Just to count again, 5 of Samardzija's flyouts were actually popups to the infielders. He seems to have a knack at doing that.

Far be it from me to be an optimist, but I recall reading a couple of years ago either at Hardball Times or a piece from TangoTiger that inducing infield popups was a skill and the effect was similar to strikeouts (routine outs & no advancement).

Knoxville News-Sentinel"]"It's early, so a good night like tonight is going to make your average jump up," Harvey said. "Hopefully, I can keep it going."

Harvey's douoble in the fifth inning needed all of two inches to clear the fence for a home run.

"I wish we could get more people on base in front of him (Harvey)," Smokies manager Buddy Bailey said. "You hate to waste doubles. We should be scoring some runs."

...

Tennessee pitcher Jeff Samardzija (2-0) faced little serious opposition. Only twice did a Suns' runner get as far as second base.

"He was able to get all of his pitches over tonight," Bailey said. "Our starters (pitchers) have matched up with everyone in the league and given us a chance to win."

The Notre Dame alum struck out five in a brisk workout of 84 pitches.

"I was attacking early and that helped me," Samardzija said. "I threw first-pitch strikes and got the lead-off guy out and kept a rhythm going

Daytona News-Journal"]Cubs starter James Russell matched Sadlowski through the first five innings. Russell, who allowed just one run in six innings in his first start of the Florida State League season, scattered five hits and got the Cardinals to ground into two double plays.

"I've been pretty happy with my off-speed stuff," he said. "And I'm locating my fastball pretty good."

...

Russell lowered his earned-run average to 0.82 but still doesn't have a win to show for his efforts.

"I was right around 70, 75 (pitches) in the fifth inning," he said. "They just decided to call it a night and end on a good note."
