Rich Harden is signed through this season at $4.5 million with a $7 million club option for 2009, after which he will be eligible for free agency.

Clearly, Billy Beane will be looking to move him this season. I'd like to have Harden over Blanton from the A's. Will Hendry be willing to give some of the farm to Beane?

The A's will contend next year. Why would he move his remaining good pitcher? He's not going to unless he's blown away like he was in the Haren offer.

I'd be willing to blow him away and get ripped off (a little) if it means we have a rotation of Z, Lilly, Harden, Hill, X for the length of this window we have right now.

I don't think Beane will be looking to move Harden. I think he could be a guy that the A's keep around. He's not starting 64 games in the next 2 years with his customary ERA in the low 3s. So, I think the A's either restructure before next year or pick up the option and negotiate a team friendly 2-3 year deal during the 09 season.

In the grand scheme of choosing talent over risk, Rich Harden is one pitcher who I would avoid despite having loads of talent. He gets injured way too much and would cost a king's ransom even though it took him 3 years to pitch one full seasons worth of games (32 starts over 3 years). I don't trust that kind of unreliability, and Beane will make a killing off of Harden's upside alone I would assume. I wouldn't like it if that were the case

I think as soon as Harden is healthy and Beane gets a good offer for him he'll sell.

The first 2 sentences don't seem to go together. If he's their only good pitcher how exactly do you think they will contend?

On the question at hand, though. I wouldn't want to take the risk on him. Unless the Cubs are looking to fill Prior's DL spot there's really no reason.

If Harden stays healthy and pitches well beane will want to move him while he has a high value. If not he will take the team option and hope for a good season next year. Unless we are the cusp of being true WS contenders Hendry won't go for him. In general I think the Cubs will avoid any pitcher with major injury issues for the next 10 years or so. Besides if we can't get Roberts I doubt we can get Harden.

Knowing what Billy Beane's needs/wants are (ML ready guys whose clocks haven't started or have only recently started) and what he looks for in a prospect (patience, OBP), am I the only one who thinks that there really is no way for us to match up well with Beane? I don't think we could consummate a trade for Harden regardless of how much we would want to make the deal happen. We really don't have any surefire prospects that fit their organizations mold. Pie is the best we have, and he's not their type of player.

Why does that matter? The fact that Angelos wouldn't give up Roberts has no effect on our chance of getting Harden. I don't think we will get him, but there's no way you can compare the two.

Why can't people stop saying Beane only wants OBP and plate discipline? He wouldn't have taken Carlos Gonzalez from the Diamondbacks if that were true.

But anyway, it doesn't matter, not going to happen.
