Would have loved to have won this game but the bigger story is Fukudome! It's obvious to me that he was pulling the wool over everyone's eyes in Spring Training with all those pathetic infield squibs. Maybe Ichiro told him to fake it so that they couldn't get the good scouting report to start the season. That dude can hit!

It didn't even feel like Soriano was playing today.

Didn't look like anybody was playing except for Fuku and Zambrano.

marmol?

And Marmol.

I'm with IMB!, he should be starting.

Now do people see why Hendry has been after THAT 2B that shall remain nameless (I won't name him for the sanity of this board) so hard this offseason. He may have said publicly that he likes Theriot and whatnot, but Hendry and Piniella both know that Theriot is not the answer at leadoff (perfectly suited for #8), but because they want to save Soriano's legs, he the "closest" to a leadoff hitter the Cubs have. Personally, right now, I think I might rather Piniella go with either DeRosa or Fuku as leadoff, until either THAT 2B that shall remain nameless or another leadoff hitter can be acquired.

Who would you rather have had leading off the game, o leading off the bottom of the 10th; THAT 2B that shall remain nameless or Theriot? Theriot is not going to cut at leadoff....

I'd rather have Theriot out of the lineup.

Brian Roberts almost definitely would have made this a completely different game today...i agree...

once again, THANKS JIM!

It was disappointing, but it definitely wasn't the worst thing that could have happened. We got a good start out of Z, Fukudome looked great, and the first 8 innings was an all around old school, low scoring affair. Theriot needs addressing, yes, but let's give him a bit of time to prove himself.

You mean like over 2000 professional atbats?

I think the biggest thing to come out of this game is Z. The last 2 years have had such terrible starts for him that it's been hard to recover. If he has managed to bypass some of that, then he could have a season that is closer to 04/05 than 06/07 (although they were all good).

Fukudome is also nice to see, although most hitters are going to have a day like this sometime during the season, and everyone knew that Fukudome would be at least average. It will take longer to find out if he's pretty good or very good.

The others don't strike me much either way. Some looked good, and some looked bad, but it's just one game. The opinions that I held before the season I still hold and probably will for at least another couple weeks.

How do you guys feel about Geo Soto's performance today? I feel like he's been very quiet and almost forgotten in the Cubs lineup. He struggled in the Spring, but looked alright today drawing 2 walks.

I think Soto will be "fine" long term, but he's gonna look like a rookie much of this year. I think many people's expectations of him are a bit unrealistic. But as you say, aty least he shows patience...I think that bodes well for him. I'm much more worried about Theriot & Pie, and it's not just b/c of today...I'm hardly the Lone Ranger on these concerns

Not totally Jim's fault. It's not like the Orioles were pestering Hendry to take Roberts for a song and Jim kept turning them down.

I'm by no means a Hendry fan in any way, shape, or form, but he doesn't get all the blame for the Roberts mess.

I look upon this game as an anomaly rather than the norm; I don't see the Cub bullpen being this bad throughout the season. There is however, one norm - Ryan Theriot really, really, really sucks and should not be leading off - I believe Lou will realize this, it may take a while but, I believe he will.
