According to the Cincinnati Enquirer, the Reds are actively seeking a catcher and could offer Ryan Freel.

The Reds want some help because of Dave Ross's injury, and Freel, who is owed $7 million over the next two years, has been available since the end of last season. About the only Freel-for-catching deal that would make sense would have him go to San Diego for Michael Barrett. No other team has both an expendable catcher and a need for Freel in their lineup. Perhaps the Reds should simply sign Mike Piazza. They're in a division that doesn't do a lot of basestealing anyway.

How bout we offer them Koyie Hill or Hank White :P

Laird is a good back-up C, ideally he would be used vs. LH'ed pitching. He has a cannon and despite his size, his quick on his feet as far as blocking balls.

Laird would be a good move for both sides. The Reds are looking for catching help, and the Rangers would like to move him to pave the way for Salty. But, I'm not sure the Rangers move him for Freel alone. The Rangers don't really have a place to give Freel everyday playing time. My guess, just like they did with Byrd, they would want more than just Freel in an exchange for Laird.

In fact, a quick perusal of http://www.newbergreport.com reveals that the Rangers aren't interested in moving Laird just yet.

Link.

The Rangers are getting interest from other teams in catcher Gerald Laird, but they aren't inclined to discuss him right now.

Teams just aren't eager to trade their Opening Day catcher in the middle of Spring Training.

Furthermore it goes on to say...

Either way, unless somebody overwhelms the Rangers with an offer, Laird appears to be with the Rangers to stay.

Somehow I don't think Ryan Freel qualifies as overwhelming them. So, then the question becomes how much would a team have to give up in order to get Laird? Would the Reds part with Votto? Certainly not Cuetto. I'm sure the Rangers would be interested in Votto + Freel for Laird and a prospect. I don't think the Reds would go there, but that might be what it takes to get him.

The Rangers also have no immediate need for Marlon Byrd any longer, but refused to trade him for Murton and went as far as asking for Ceda or Marshall or Gallagher to go with Murton.

So, while Laird makes the obvious target, I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for it to happen.

Is it weird that even though Dusty is managing another team, all the Dusty inspired transactions the Reds are making are pissing me off like they did when he was with the Cubs?

I want them to get Michael Barrett just so I can make fun of Cinci some more for signing all of Dusty's washed up ex-Cubs.

Barrett would rake in that ballpark, I think.

You mean they want him for the grounds crew? =D>

With all the bullpen guys (Not that good though) the Reds have, it would be a match made in heaven for Dusty to get Pudge.

They already got Pudge 2.0 in Paul Bako. No real need for him now

Imagine grouping those two together? Dustnasty.
