Okay, so the Cubs put in a new field with a wonderful new drainage system last fall. So can someone tell me why RF is flooded this morning?

Something is plugging the drain(s)?

Problem is like any drainage system right now. It is filled with snow and ice which is preventing the water from draining into it. Instead the water is sitting on top of the ice and snow since it is still so cold.

I don't know how drainage systems work but it seems like 6 inches of snow melting in a day will produce a lot of water. In the season, the drainage system to will help drain a steady flow of water when it rains. Just my guess, I'm no expert. Kinda funny though.

For an underground storage system, that's nothing new. All household sprinkler systems freeze in the winter, even after being properly excavated. The pipes are trying to take in the water, but since we are consistently floating around the freezing mark, they are backing up.

So they don't heat/thermal wrap or put any anti freeze in them?

Let me look into the materials they used, and I'll get back with a better answer. Just have to find that Tribune story.

Well, it looks like they used PVC pipes. While much of the drainage system is probably insulated, the areas used for collection are most likely not, which would cause a backup.

Also, I didn't find any good depths for which the pipes are buried, but frost level in Chicago can get rather deep. 4-6 feet, and I don't think they buried them down that far.

Last thought, right field is backing up, which is also where the drainage tank is. The drainage tank might be closed to prevent the tank from cracking due to permafrost.

I'm no expert, but I've taken a few classes relative to this.

I'm surprised that they don't keep the water constantly moving like they do for boats on a lake or river to stop the water from freezing in the pipes. Wasn't left field the problem last year, especially regarding Dunn?

I was thinking the same thing, but I recall the Tribune article saying the holding tank was necessary because the City wouldn't allow them to discharge constantly, and they would only be permitted to discharge in accordance with the City.

Well, at least this wasn't a poorly veiled attempt at heaping unwarranted criticism at one's former employer.

So you're saying that they will find broken pieces of a boombox in the pipes?

And syringes.

It'll be like the curse of the Bambino. The Cubs won't win a world series for 100 years.

Just got an update as to WHY RF is flooded....the pipes in the drainage system are frozen.

That is pretty detailed info you have on Wrigley, like you have some kind of insider info. Can you tell me why then they haven't updated the urinals in the men's bathroom at Wrigley.

If you've ever been physically stuck in a group of people for five minutes in the new Soldier Field bathrooms while trying to get out, you'd know why.
