An arrest warrant has been issued by the Irvine Police Department for Scott Spiezio on six charges stemming from a Dec. 30 incident.

The warrant alleges driving under influence, driving under the influence with a blood alcohol content of .08 percent or more, hit and run, aggravated assault, assault and battery. Spiezio was on the restricted list for a time last season because of substance abuse problems.

"At approximately 12:20 a.m. [PT] on Dec. 30, 2007, Spiezio is accused of leaving a bar in Newport Beach after spending the evening drinking several vodka drinks. He is accused of getting into his 2004 BMW and attempting to drive home while under the influence of alcohol. Spiezio is accused of speeding, cutting across several lanes, crossing through the oncoming traffic lanes, driving over a curb, and crashing into a fence. The crash knocked down a fence pole and blew out the front two tires of the car. Spiezio is accused of getting out of the car and fleeing the scene on foot.

HILARIOUS!!

I guess Josh Hancock didn't make much of an impression on this team. I expect players to make mistakes, I expect players to drink, but my god your a freaking millionaire own up to your mistakes.

The red soul patch looks really stupid now.

yeah that thing looked really stupid all along.

Would have looked cool if it was the result of a Wood fastball to the chin

Lets see, they release Spiezio, but they retain LaRussa? Hmm, I understand LaRussa didn't flee the scene from his DUI, but still...

Nor did he have to take a leave for a substance abuse problem the season earlier. Gustavo Chacin, Dontrelle Willis and Esteban Loaiza have also had DUI's and weren't released. It's a situational thing.

Does anyone believe the Cardinals weren't informed of this accident 8 weeks ago? LaRussa was aware of it and thought nothing would come of it. Sounds familiar.

The spin will be the team acted quick, they love their fans..Tony is great...blah..blah. Ticket sales must be starting soon.

Cardinals released infielder-outfielder Scott Spiezio.

They should know by now that only the manager is allowed to drive drunk in St. Louis. Spiezio's life is a mess, and this probably won't help him turn it around, not that the Cardinals necessarily owe him anything. They were certainly more than generous when they gave him a two-year, $4.5 million contract after the World Series in 2006. Say it again with us... multiyear contracts for bench players rarely work out.

Everything I've heard down here is that Spiezio did everything he could to hide this from the Cards. There's a few reporters down here who don't cut them any slack when they screw up and they're even supporting the claims of no knowledge of the incident by the Cards. I actually have a tendency to believe it because the upper management in the Cards organization isn't dumb enough to take another PR hit on this type of issue for a player as insignificant as Spiezio. Same reason they told Tony no way on the Bonds deal.

Tony LaRussa himself said he knew about the accident, but "didn't think anything would come of it."

This after Spiezio had spent time in rehab for drug abuse during last season.

On top of it, Spiezio was apparently buddies with Hancock. I mean it just goes on & on. The connections are clear -- I just think you have to have your head in the sand to not figure out this kind of stuff will eventually happen.
