Wouldn't it be funny if Mark Cuban bought the naming rights and didn't change the name? Boy, that'd be a "game, set, match" with this crowd.

But Cuban wants to get rid of the 7th inning Take me out to the ballgame and have a Dancing with the Stars during the 7th instead.

it would be an upgrade

Even though Wrigley is technically a named stadium already, I would think whoever buys the naming rights won't remove the Wrigley reference. There's simply too much name recognition to it and if you thought the blacklash from the Marshall Fields name was bad, you've seen nothing yet. Maybe something like Wrigley Field at Oprah Park.

Isn't the Marquee protected as a landmark. So, even if they sell the name, the Marquee would still say Wrigley Field, right? Or does Zell have enough pull to get permission to remove or change the marquee?

Good question. Maybe just the look (Red background with white lettering and the shape) is protected and the Cubs could put anything on the marquee.

I'm not as worried about a potential name change as I am about a new owner having to pay rent. That's the issue that will have a negative impact on the team.

Let the Wrigley company pay for the naming rights. They've been getting free adverting for years.

I never think of gum when I hear "Wrigley Field". In fact, when I hear "Wrigley", even in a gum commercial, I think of the Cubs. So should the Cubs pay them for the free subliminal advertising?

:D

You've never had Wrigleys Old Fashioned flavored gum?

Sure I have, but if I see or hear the name Wrigley I think "Field" and not "gum".

I guess I'm more of a Cub fan than a gum man.

:D

the only way Wrigley Gum would have had free advertising all these years is if there were huge Wrigley Gum advertisements all over the ballpark.

While I'm not happy about it, I think, as far as the landmark status, that any potential corporate buyer would treat Wrigley as Macy's has with Marshall's downtown. Most people still call it Marshall's, and they haven't changed any of the plaques or anything. It's just a Macy's inside. I'm hopeful they do something comparable.

I wonder if they'd do something like "Wrigley Field presented by Old Style"

I don't think my bank account is big enough for that.

It's clear that you just don't love the Cubs enough.

I'd give every penny I have right now, but that's probably only enough to get an Old Style and a dog in my bleacher seat.

The only way this is true is if there really is no advertising value in having your name on a ballpark.

I don't want to come off sounding too gay . . . but it was Marshall Field's that was bought-out by Macy's. Marshall's is a discount clothing store, and not the same at all. At least that's what all these babes in my lap are telling me . . .

What's gay got to do with that?

it is true. NOBODY associates Wrigley Field with Wrigley Gum. I don't even associate the Wrigley Building with Wrigley Gum

I duunno, I guess the fact that I know that - but you're right, that's not gay at all. I TAKE IT BACK!

It doesn't have anything to do with associating the name.

People don't think United Airlines everytime they think United Center. Certainly it's not the same as a company that explicitly advertises it's name on the building, physically and on paper. I'm not arguing that the benefit to Wrigley is the same as the benefit US Cellular gets from having its name on US Cellular Field (if there is a benefit to that). But there is a benefit. WM. Wrigley Jr. Co. clearly gets some benefit from having its name attached, however loosely, to Wrigley Field. There is no doubt about that.

Agreed. It might not be slamdunk obvious, but it's there, especialy with people who know the connection between the gums and the field. Hell, the only reason I've ever bought Wrigley is because of that. I grew up knowing that it was "the Cubs' gum."
