Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com reports that the Reds are interested in Kenny Lofton.

Signing Lofton would seemingly lead to top prospect Jay Bruce beginning the season in the minors, as the Reds could go with a Lofton-Ryan Freel or Lofton-Norris Hopper platoon in center field. Even at 41 years old Lofton is a fine platoon starter, hitting .296 with a .367 on-base percentage last season.

That's kind of a pointless acquisition if done. If Freel goes down, Hopper can fill in. If he's not adequate enough, Bruce should get a shot. Lofton only delays Bruce, which I suppose is good for the rest of the league

I wonder if some of the interest in Lofton would be in case Bruce gets moved in a potential Blanton deal?

To me that sounds like trying to cover up dog turd, with cat turd. Trading Bruce for Blanton, and then signing Lofton does nothing but makes the Reds slightly less mediore. If they wanted a medicore RH, there is Kyle Lohse who is still available. In other words, if I am the Reds GM, I would hold onto Bruce (when the Tigers traded their best CF prospect, Maybing, they got Miguel Cabrera, if the Reds trade their best CF prospect in Bruce---comparable in talent to Maybin--all they ask for is Joe Blanton? Why not offer up Jason Marquis for Bruce right now), because good teams hold onto their best young players, not trade them for medicore veterans.

I wasn't saying that replacing Bruce with Lofton was a good idea. I was just curious if people thought this interest in Lofton might indicate that Bruce could be included in a potential Blanton trade, given that the Reds have been reported to be after Blanton. Since that the As have reportedly asked for Ethier and Laroche in the Blanton talks with the Dodgers, I think it is reasonable that Bruce would be on the short list of guys the As would require as a centerpiece in any Blanton trade.

The Reds refused to include Bruce in a trade with the Orioles for Bedard. I don't know why they would turn around and include him in a trade for a worse pitcher in Blanton.

Ehhhh...I think the odds of Bruce being included in any deal for Blanton are pretty slim. He's arguably the top prospect in baseball and has the potential to be a multi-time All Star. However, I could see him traded in another deal. For whom, I have no idea.

I think it's more likely Lofton would be brought in as a platoon partner to "break" Bruce into the majors. Don't we remember all those fun songs and dances with our prospects?

That 98.6% comment would be funny coming from some managers, but since it's Dusty, I'll assume he's displaying signs of late onset Down Syndrome.

That comment was from Freel.

Lofton and Bruce both bat left-handed. How are they going to platoon?

Lofton vs. all veterans, Bruce vs. all 1st or 2nd year pitchers.

Close. Bruce would get all of the tough veteran pitchers who would make him look bad.

can't trust Bruce to face the young pitchers, as we don't have the book on them yet

Gotta give Kenny a rest dude. It's like you have an old dog and a young dog. You let your old dog run around with the young dogs, he's just gonna get tired out. Can't teach him new tricks or somethin. How does it go?
