As a general FYI, under the new rule changes, the first day of the draft is now only the first two rounds.

Such a stupid idea, IMO.

Oh crap why didn't I know this? I thought they just changed it from 15 minutes to 10 minutes for 1st round picks.

LAKE FOREST, Ill. – Following a detailed investigation and a hearing, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has determined that the San Francisco 49ers violated the league’s anti-tampering policy last season by contacting linebacker Lance Briggs’ agent without the Bears’ permission.

As a result of the ruling, the Bears will swap third-round draft picks with the 49ers, moving up five slots to the seventh selection of the third round. According to a chart used by NFL teams that assigns numerical values to each pick in the draft, the move equates to a sixth-round choice. San Francisco will also forfeit its fifth-round pick, but the Bears will not receive that selection.

Pretty significant move. The Bears get to keep Briggs, and switch picks with 9ers. Teach those "Golden" Boys to tamper with property that isn't theirs'.

According to Rotoworld....

Bears head coach Lovie Smith met with Arkansas running backs Darren McFadden and Felix Jones on Monday.

The Bears were thought to be seeking an offensive tackle with the 14th pick, but the pursuit of competition for RB Cedric Benson could be genuine. It has been suspected that Benson's rehabilitation from a fractured left ankle is not going smoothly, in which case he could be phased out of the team's plans.

Felix will probably go in the second round, but I don't know why they'd meet with McFadden. There's almost no way he'd fall to #14.....

And Angelo would never, ever, ever, ever trade up in the first round.....would he?

Maybe Angelo has discussed the idea of trading up?

it would seem out of character for him. he usually trades down

And with the amount of work necessary on the OL, it would seem silly to trade up....

What team do you think he would trade with? I mean, McFadden is usually projected to go to the Jets at #6...

I know the Dolphins are looking at trading down, but I doubt JA would trade up that high...

I am usually fine with trading down, and not very interested in trading up. And that is doubly true this year. This team needs quantity of quality, not one difference maker. They need multiple offensive additions, and a body or two on defense, if they want to be successful.

I doubt the Bears are trading up, they're just doing their homework. I'm sure most teams meet up with guys who are expected to go about 10-15 picks higher in the first round (esp. if it's a position they'd use their first rounder on) just to be better prepared in the off chance said player falls mightily on draft day (e.g. Randy Moss). It's all the more easier to do when McFadden's teammate was there too and Felix Jones could be around for the Bears' 2nd round pick.

They need to do *something* sheesh. This team is in a stagnant hole right now, making no moves to replace released players, doing nothing during FA to improve the club at all.

Draft day needs to come. Tomorrow. We're withering on the vine here.

The insanity of the 49ers/Briggs situation deepens!

Bears | Team receives SF's draft picks

The Associated Press reports the Chicago Bears will receive the San Francisco 49ers' third-round and fifth-round draft picks in the 2008 NFL Draft because the 49ers tampered with Bears LB Lance Briggs. NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said the 49ers contacted Briggs' agent, Drew Rosenhaus, which violated the NFL's anti-tampering policy. The Bears will receive the seventh overall pick in the third-round and the 49ers fifth-round pick.

There's a huge difference between swapping third round picks with SF losing their fifth round pick and the Bears getting both SF's third and fifth round picks.

Updated, looks like the AP got it wrong:

49ers | Update on team's forfeited draft pick

Wed, 26 Mar 2008 10:38:59 -0700

Updating a previous report, The Associated Press reports the San Francisco 49ers forfeited their fifth-round draft pick in the 2008 NFL Draft after NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said they tampered with Chicago Bears LB Lance Briggs. The 49ers will have to trade their third-round draft pick, seventh overall in the third round, to the Bears for their third-round pick, the 12th overall pick in the third round.

Dang. :(
