Sign me up for Dempster or Marquis plus a prospect for Crisp! (assuming of course that prospect isn't Pie, Gallagher, Vitters etc.)

If they could swing that, then that would open the door to a Pie deal focusing on acquiring a SS or "good" starter. Pie and B level prospect to Oakland for Blanton would work for me.

Is there any realistic chance Demp/Marquis + prospect would net us crisp?

If there is I would take that in a second!!!!!

me too

If I'm not mistaken, Boston doesn't want him anymore and would readily move him in a trade. Marquis/ Dempster and mid level prospect might do it. They may still demand more, but seeing as how they have a hole in their rotation, they could be desparate.

They don't really have "a hole in their rotation", at least not one that Dempster or Marquis would meaningfully fill.

Beckett - Daisuke - Buchholz - Lester - Wakefield

Latest from my source: developing story out of Boston - Curt Schilling may be out for the season due to a serious shoulder problem. Boston may be in the market for a starting pitcher. While Ken Rosenthal suggested yesterday that the Cubs were not interested in Crisp because he would block Pie and Colvin, my source thinks the Cubs real reluctance was taking on Crisp's contract. However, based on new circumstances, there may be an opportunity for the Cubs to offset Crisp's salary in 2008 by trading an equal salary like Ryan Dempster's or Jason Marquis in addition to a prospect.

All still rumor phase, but intriguing.

I don't know if it is realistic or not, I was just commenting on HoopsCubs' source's rumor.

Yeah that's not a rotation with a "hole" necessarily, but both Buchholz and Lester are only 24 and neither have thrown a particularly high number of innings. Daisuke really wore down at the end of last year and Wakefield is no spring chicken either (even though he's a knuckler). I would see someone like Dempster appealing to them as an bullpen arm/emergency starter/insurance plan. At least that is what I hope Hendry and Lou have accomplished with this "Dempster to the rotation" garbage they have been spewing.

I recall reading/hearing from Papelbon that he likes his role as closer, but isn't there a decent chance they'd stretch him out to start as well?

I see them needing someone down the stretch when the youth are tired, and Wakefield/Beckett are on the DL. I don't think they're as desperate as we'd hope (to take Dempster/Marquis). I think they'll have enough to enter the trade market for a pending FA arm in June (Sabathia, Sheets, a healthy Prior, Burnett).

Don't you remember how 2007 started? After Papelbon ended 2006 with injuries, they decided to use him as a starter so he wouldn't pitch but once every 5 days. Right before the season started, Papelbon told them that he changed his mind and still wanted to close, and that that's where his heart is.

They already have Tavarez who can swing as a reliever or a starter.

Couldn't we ask for Jed Lowrie, instead?

Please?

At its hottest, the Cubs' interest in Crisp is lukewarm. First off, they don't like his contract. Second, what happens if you get him and Pie shows signs he's "gotten it" in spring training and Colvin progresses at the plate and shows he might be able to play center field. You're then stuck with Crisp, who is blocking the paths of two players.

Anyone in particular the Cubs are interested in Bruce?

Or are they satisfied with what they got?

As I mentioned in the endless Roberts thread, they've asked about Marlon Byrd. They're happy to go to camp with what they have, but I wouldn't rule out Hendry trying to make a deal in the final week of spring training.

is a 2 year deal really blocking colvin?

Not necessarily, but those are the feelings of the Cubs people I've talked with. They also don't see Crisp as being that much of an upgrade.

The whole point of a Crisp trade would be to make Pie available to upgrade at SS or at SP, but evidently, the Cubs aren't into that.

would you use pie in a deal for burnett?

Bump.

From what I've been told, the Cubs still aren't all that wild about Crisp, but they may have to explore it because other GMs are reluctant to talk trade. Why, who knows? But if something along this lines happens, the Cubs would have to move a similar contract to Boston. This would NOT be a precursor to trading Pie and/or "upgrading" at SS or starting pitching. The Cubs are committed to Theriot at SS, but I wouldn't be surprised if Cedeno gets consideration to start if he has a strong spring (provided he's not traded).
