At this rate, we could get Cain and Lincecum for Aramis. Would anyone do that if Aramis waived his no trade clause?

Really interesting question...

I'd have to get the opinion of a bunch of people smarter than me about when Lincecum's and Cain's arms might be subject to falling off.

Some scouts think Lincecum is a walking time bomb. Some think he can throw like that forever.

Cain worries me a bit more, simply because he looks like a workhorse, so he's been treated like one. Still, he's not in any imminent danger for this season.

Either way, with a rotation that sick, we'd be in pretty good shape. I don't care if we have to sign Pedro Feliz to play third...

Wouldn't be a bad idea, his defense is really really good.

I'm really not too concerned with our defense right now... Theriot is the only below average defensive player starting for us, and DeRosa is probably the only one that comes in right at average. We probably have the best defensive outfield in the league, Soto has an excellent reputation, and DLee is about as good a first baseman as there is. And Aramis has come around on his defense by quite a bit. He was well above average last year.

Still, replace Aramis with Feliz, and with our starting staff consisting of Cain, Lincecum, Z, Hill, and Lilly... We'd probably have the best run prevention in the league. We certainly wouldn't need to score many runs to win most days.

The Chicago Sun-Times speculates that the White Sox and Giants may already "have a deal in place" for Joe Crede if his back looks healthy during spring training.

The newspaper speculates that Crede "will be gone by the middle of Cactus League play" if he shows that he's healthy. Whether San Francisco is the destination or not, it seems fairly obvious that Crede won't begin the season in Chicago.

So odd that they would count on his spring training play. Why not just have team doctors evaluate his back rigorously? So say he goes out there for 2 weeks and hits .100. "Oh, his back must not be healthy, deal is off." Or he goes out and knocks the cover off the ball in a few games and the deal is on. Is half a season of Cactus League play going to tell the Giants what they need to know about his back? I don't see what stats OR scouts could possibly see in a few games of spring training action that would allow them to make that determination. Now, a medical exam? Sure.

If this is really the case, it amazes me (OK, it really doesn't) what goes on in terms of decision making in professional sports, particularly baseball.

It's sort of funny how the same metropolitan area has both the worst and best GM's in baseball.

Beane? really?

It might be arguable, but yes, really.

Schuerholz, Ryan, and Jocketty are gone.(Not saying they were all better, just that people would often have them as better) Only ones left in his league are Dombrowski and Shapiro.

Maybe Theo? Shapiro is pretty damn good, though.

I find Theo a little overrated. Good GM for sure, but I'd put him on the 2nd tier. Of course it's damn near impossible comparing GMs in a vaccum when payroll is such a huge factor in how they work.

Theo inherited Manny Damon Lowe and Pedro.

Ortiz signing was brilliant but it wasn't. Dude wanted Jeremy Giambi starting over him.

Come to think of it, what has Theo done? It's nice to have a 135m payroll to cover your mistakes of Drew, Lugo, Clement, Renteria, Pena...

I'd probably take Gillick over a bunch of the guys mentioned.

TOWERS

I'm back and forth on Towers. He's done a good job, for the most part, when it comes to acquiring pitching, but when it comes to acquiring offense, drafting, and developing players, he hasn't been all that good.

Beneficiary of three stud pitchers having great health and a bunch of mediocre hitters who shot their bodies chock full of steroids. No such luck with Harden and he can't field a decent hitter anymore. That team isn't doing feces for awhile and payroll will be the convenient excuse. If I've got a slashed budget, just give me Beinfest instead.

It just said "looks healthy during spring training", it didn't say anything about the #s he'll be putting up, and I'm sure there will be a littany of medical tests, but theres nothing like the real thing of getting out there on the dirt with spikes on doing drills, being in games, etc. I mean are you really going to have a medical test of him alternating between a ready and a lose position in spikes on dirt for 10 minutes, then sitting down on a bench for 10 minutes, then repeating, one of the times having him swing a bat 5 times, etc. A combination of medical tests before and during spring training as well as watching how hes doing in games is the way to go. It didn't seem to me at all that they'd judge it on 30 ABs or anything like that, but I might be giving Sabean too much credit.

Fine, but what the hell does "looks healthy" even mean? Are they gonna judge his posture and the way he's walking around? Are they just gonna make sure he doesn't writhe in pain after every play he makes?

I don't know. Whatever.

Suprises me the Giants haven't made an effort to pick up Julio Franco. Anybody know where he is playing this year? I can look it up but I am being extremely lazy tonight.

Nowhere that I know of. It's too bad, I was really hoping he would make it to 50 playing. Maybe somebody will pick him up for the stretch run and make that happen.

Me too. A guy who's almost 50, and a team that loves old guys. It's a match made in heaven.
