These contracts are always a good idea. Every now and then you wind up with an Angel Berroa out of it, but they're for so little money that you can afford to have 2 that go bust for everyone that works out.

Rockies would be stupid to do this now. Why not wait 2 years, when he's arbitration eligible? They are giving him a raise and don't need to at this point.

It shows good faith to Troy and a commitment to the rest of the players.

I know all that, it doesn't mean it's a good financial decision right now. He's played 1 year. It's the largest extension given to a player with less than 2 years of service. His OPS was down 100 points after the AS break. No reason to give him that money without seeing if he can do it again.

Here's more the response I was expecting in the thread. I see both sides, but lean towards it being very risky.

There's less risk since he's such an excellent defender. Derek Jeter makes $19 million a year. He'll remember this when he becomes a free agent. It's worth it.

07-09:$20M/year, 10:$21M

Jeter signed his deal after A-Rod and Manny drove up the price. The original contract was 7 years at 118.5 Million, based on the Juan Gonzales deal with Detroit. When Gonzales turned them down, Steinbummer pulled Jeters offer (not wanting to set a salary precedent) and gave Jeter a one year deal. The next year, A-Rod and Manny popped the salary structure and George had to pony up the extra years and money. Not to mention that after accepting the one year deal, Jeter won the All-star MVP and World series MVP, thereby leading to the bigger deal.

Most people also factor in the 2M annually from his signing bonus paid through 08. Meaning Jeter in 08 = 22M, 09=20, 10=21.

They are spending more now to save more later. When he is arb eligible, he holds all the cards and not the other way around. It also takes away his first year of FA eligibility. As an example, they are paying Holliday 12 million a year now that he is arb eligible. And if he continues to produce, will be paying him even more on his first year of FA.
