Does any organization get more for crap in trades than the Cardinals? Scott Rolen is terrible. We can't give away Jacque Jones for two years, let alone for a guy who has Glaus' potential.

It's interesting that you brought up Jacque Jones, because that's exactly what I thought of. Rolen doesn't want to be in St. Louis, so STL trades him out of the country and to a crappy team for a very respectable return. The Cubs trade Jacque Jones (who doesn't want to be in Chicago) to a team that's lined up to win a World Series as soon as this year for very little return.

The difference is that Jacque Jones, at his best, isn't all that bad, but is quite often all that bad. While Scott Rolen is often extremely good.

It doesn't make a lot of sense for Toronto if 2007 Rolen is here for good. But if you have a reasonable expectation for some improvement, it's a very good move for them.

Was I the only one that was really surprised to see that Rolen is only 32? I thought he was at least 35.

He's only 32?

That's part of the reason I hate this trade. I don't think Rolen is anywhere close to finished and his subpar '06 was better than every year Glaus has had save his '00 career year. The difference in age between he and Glaus is less than a year and a half, and Glaus' injuries seem to have a more chronic nature than Rolen's. Not to mention our pitching has been terrible and Glaus definitely isn't going to give them any help.

Who gets the better of the deal here is reliant on the health of both players. If they can both stay healthy and put up similar numbers, it's an even trade. However, both will probably be hurt and when healthy Rolen is a better fielder than Glaus.

So the Cards give up an offensively declining player who can at least still field the ball for a known steroid user whose offense will probably decline and was never a good fielder to begin with. Solid.

John Dewan really likes Glaus defensively, iirc. I'll take his word for it, since it is his life.

Well, yeah. Health is a factor in any trade, and, yeah, if they put up "similar numbers" it's an even trade. I don't understand if you are saying anything here. It's like saying that if I drink a whole can of soda, the can will then be empty.

This deal has a sense of humor:"Oh, you are demanding a trade, Scotty? Fine - you are banished to Toronto. Enjoy the ugly stadium an a 0% chance of ever playing in the postseason."

Not to mention his number two gripe in Philly was playing on concrete turf. His back is going to have a good time with that again.

Basically it comes down to unloading a cancer and getting a player who they think is a better bet to be healthy going forward. Glaus' injuries appear to be more recurrent while Rolen's injuries appear to be more debilitating on his performance. It's a good trade for the Cardinals from where I'm looking at it. Then again, I am neither privy to the true nature of the Cardinals club house mood nor am I a doctor.

As easy as it is to make fun of Toronto's chances to make the playoffs, I think they'd probably win the NL Central.

hmm...thought-provoking.

good trade for the cardinals, in my opinion.

+1

I think Toronto's on thin ice with this one. Rolen's shoulder seems very Bagwell-esque to me.

Since they have similar numbers, I'd take Glaus because his issues are foot and ankle related. Rolen's issues are with the shoulder and that would scare me.

It seems like every team Rolen leaves (Phillies, Cardinals), he leaves with bad blood. His leaving St.Louis is far past due.

This time he doesn't get to cherry pick which club he gets to go to.
