Matt Clement-S-Red Sox Jan. 3 - 3:30 pm et

The Cardinals and free agent Matt Clement have reportedly agreed to a major league deal.

The Pirates, Indians, Mariners, Diamondbacks, Blue Jays and Rockies were some other teams mentioned in connection with Clement, who will be ready to compete for a rotation spot after missing last season following shoulder surgery.

Blah, Clement was one of my favorite Cubs for that little time. Anyone but he Cardinals and I wouldn't really care.

Duncan likes his journeyman rehab projects.

He also loves pitchers that feature a two-seam fastball.

It's altogether sad and entertaining that the Cardinals have made reclamation projects their preferred way of acquiring players.

For a while there, Hendry was on the same plan.

Not to the level that St. Louis has in the last 2 years.

In comparison, Hendry only dabbled in the rehab game. His preferred form of acquisition was the generic, overpay mediocre free agents thing.

Looks like Clement won't be ready anytime soon:

Pitcher Matt Clement is highly unlikely to be ready for Opening Day, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Clement threw one bullpen session, and pitching coach Dave Duncan didn't like what he saw: "He's behind. How far? Don't know yet," he said, according to the newspaper.

Clement signed for $1.5 million guaranteed after missing all of 2007 with the Red Sox, and over the winter the Cardinals talked about him as though they expected him to be part of their rotation.

That's no longer anything close to definite.

That's a shame. I really liked Clement as a pitcher and as a Cub. If there's any one pitcher on the Cardinals that I want to succeed, it's him. (Of course, I want him to be lousy against the Cubs as a professional courtesy).

Just a guess, but it certainly sounds like the Red Sox are more than happy to get rid of Matty, as his rehab was not progressing as they'd hoped.

He might not pitch at all.

---Suprise, suprise. I'm not. News flash: Prior wont be ready either.

Damn. I'm not going to like hating Clement, but I'll do it.

+1

This sucks.

Yea. I was a Clement fan too. To go along with this year's Mark Prior CYA, this will definitely feel like a kick in the nuts. Oh well.
