Futhermore, this allows him to rehab at home. I'm not surprised he took less to go to San Diego. Prior likely hopes to rehab for his home team, prove himself healthy, and then cash in on a major deal this offseason.

I can so see Jim Hendry offering him 7/150 if he repeats his 02-04 performance.

He really must think he is going to come back and pitch well, since the Padres are paying him quite a bit less than what the Cubs would have paid him in 2008. As for him being "soft", Tom Shaer (sp?) was on CLTV's Sports Page Sunday night and said that two veterans on the Cubs told him that Prior wasn't respected by his team mates and that they thought he was soft. That's the first time that I had heard any "official" confirmation that team mates thought he was soft. Of course there's been a ton of discussion from fans and sports radio on his wussiness.

The only people dumber than baseball front office types are baseball players

Less than the Cubs were going to offer and no option. I think it's pretty clear he wanted out all along.

No option is clearly what he wanted all along. He wants to be able to come back pitch well, then shop himself on the open market. Not come back, pitch well and be stuck with a below market deal.

I agree. I don't think its fair to say that he signed for less than what the cubs were offering him, because in his mind, he didn't. All speculation has the cubs not offering him a one year deal. And as evidenced by them declining to tender him, they weren't interested in a one year deal. There never was a "well if prior will sign for 2M, then the cubs will offer him a 1 year deal" talk. It was always, "the only way the cubs will sign him is if they can add on an option year".

At this point, I don't think the cubs are to blame and I don't think Prior is to blame. Certainly a case can be made about burning bridges, name calling, abusing pitcher, etc. But come this offseason, it made sense for the cubs to retain Prior only if they could have an option on him for a second year and it made sense for Prior to have the option of being a FA as soon as possible. It can be debated as to whether or not the 3.5M would have been a good investment to see if Prior could come back in the second half, but at this juncture, the cubs have painted themselves financially into a corner with the contracts Hendry has handed out.

So wrong. You forgot a little group called fans.

This was on ChicagoSports.com with the included caption:

Prior then started to have injury problems, and the fans most associate this image with the disappointing follow-up to Prior's promising start.

And that caption is right. I declare fans the winner.

We are debating who is dumber?

Sportswriters not named Bruce Miles.

I win.

He REALLY wanted out if he took only 1 mil to go to SD...Atleast were done with all the drama and contreversy that was involved with him...I see him never repeating himself..He will be a Wade Miller throwing 88 MPH fastballs after his surgery. SD can have fun with all those towel drills and and all drama and crying.Prediciton: He throws a couple pitches and misses entire season with vaginal strain

Stay classy Chicago...

$1MM is all it took to sign him? There must be some bad stuff in his medical records if that is all he could get. Even Wade Miller got more than that.

This is a good point. He maybe stuck with a bp fastball the rest of his likely short career.
