The Cubs need to acquire another SS if they need average production out of the SS position. Unfortunately, it seems like every SS will require too much value to trade for. So the Cubs options, if it be Theriot, Cedeno, DeRosa, or some combination thereof is still the best option as of this point, although far from ideal. If the Cubs get an opening for an available better SS, they should take it.

The Cubs "powers that be" have talked about speed all offseason long. A change at SS is needed, but Theriot adds to the speed Hendry/Piniella are looking for. I just hope he isn't at the top of the lineup.

The thing about SS is while they are lacking at the major league level, there isn't any decent hope in the minors either. It's Cedeno improves or bust, because Theriot is a bust, and Cedeno could be. SS is a need now, and it's probably going to be a need every year for the foreseeable future, until they go outside the organization to find a real one. I'm all for going to Cedeno, and don't like the idea that Theriot may have been promised the spot.

And I don't buy for a second that knowing he's the guy will somehow allow Theriot to prepare physically this offseason to handle 6 months of the job next summer.

I would at least hope that if they were going to move Soriano down to 5 that they would put Roberts at 1 and Theriot at 2, although I certainly hope that Theriot is nowhere near the top.

I was just thinking that Pie's production might be slightly down if he's batting directly behind Soto. Pie legs out a lot of his doubles and triples, and he's not going to be able to do that as much if the slowest man on the team is on 1st base. Putting Pie in front of Soto makes even less sense though because that gives more opportunities to a likely worse hitter.

Yeah, I've always found that to be rather lame.

Prince Fielder's last month in 2007: .333 .478 .733

If Prince Fielder isn't worn out, how can Theriot be worn out late in the season?

Playing with so much grit takes a lot out of a player.

Can he play SS? There's your answer.

Well depends on what you mean by need

If you are content with a team that is good enough to win the central with a not great shot to win the pennant we could stay put.

If you want a team that has a realistic shot at winning the pennant, absolutely yes.

I think its obvious how everyone defines need so then it becomes a question of making it fit in the budget of 115M o whatever it is Hendry can spend.

yup, time for a new 10 page thread trashing Theriot.

Better 1 thread about it than a debate taking place across 8-10 threads.

I think that a platoon of Derosa/Theriot may well work fine. Theriot hit what? .320 in 2006 albeit in only a couple hundred ABs. He CAN be a spark plug. If DeRosa gets the lion's share of ABs at SS it goes a longer way toward the supersub and a reliable OBP guy getting his 400+ . As for Cedeno probably :pig:

Get Roberts. Get Blanton if you can. Stay healthy. 2008 will be a good cub year.

First, how many upgrades at SS are readily available? Personally, I don't see any upgrades at SS as being available. We've kicked around the idea of Greene, but I don't remember seeing any serious speculation that he was available. If the Cubs get Roberts and Blanton (or the equivalent), they certainly should be favorites to win the NL Central and have a shot at the WS. As I have pointed out before, all that a GM can do is put together the best possible team on paper so that you can get to the playoffs. After that it's a crapshoot.

If we can get Blanton, the offseason would be a tremendous success.

I agree with this...it seems we need another starter more than a shortstop too. The possibility of having Dempster AND Marquis in the rotation is not a turn on. I think Blanton could help us win more than any of the available shortstops.

Having both Dempster and Marquis as our 4th and 5th starter is going to hurt us. They are going to be so bad and I just wish both of them are gone.

Am I (and badnews) the only one not sold on Blanton?

Not at all. I don't think he'd be worth the talent that would be required to get him. There is so little consistency in his numbers and splits that he is too much of a question mark to be giving top talent for.

Santa's fast, but is he a south paw? Has he been tested for PED?
