George Ofman on WSCR AM-670 is reporting that the Cubs are looking into signing Taguchi.

I was afraid you came in here to say that.

If the Cubs are going to have Pie play in CF, then just LET HIM PLAY.

Every Cub prospect does not need to be babied with platoon partners.

BTW the Brewers are hot on the trail of Kenny Lofton. If they get him, they will move Hall to 3B and Braun to LF.

Maybe I'm alone here, but I wouldn't mind Taguchi.

You're alone. So very alone.

So Taguchi sucks. If you absolutely insist on a platoon partner for Pie, find a better one.

Oh I'm talking about Taguchi as a 5th outfielder. A platoon partner for Pie? Absolutely not.

RH 5th outfielder= platoon partner for Pie. Book it.

Give me Sam Fuld as the 5th OF.

You're not alone - I see value in Taguchi platooning with Pie against tough lefties as well as being a 5th outfielder/mentor to Fukudome. I'd prefer Taguchi over Angel Pagan, Sam Fuld or Ronny Cedeno.

This is your bench as of today if you sign Taguchi.

LH- Ward

RH- Murton

RH- Cedeno

RH- Blanco

RH- Taguchi

UGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

Japanese Translator that travels with Fukudome and folds his underwear= 100K

So Taguchi talking to Fukudome and not folding his underwear= 750K

Except BBB, I don't expect to see Murton in a Cubs uniform. His spot on your bench will be taken by Mike Sweeney.

I would rather sign Orstuka for the bullpen or give an invite to BH Kim than So.

I believe Byung-Hyum Kim is Korean, so I don't think that would work culturally.

Otsuka, maybe.

I wouldn't mind Taguchi either, provided he was only used vs. the toughest of all tough LHPs. 1 yr/$1M, I'd do, and not a penny or season more.

I would trust Lou to use him wisely.

But, but, but...he doesn't have an OPS over .800! How can we possibly tolerate having him on our bench?

That's an oddly and inappropriately sarcastic comment. Since when have people demanded 800 OPS or bust on the bench?

He will turn 39 in the middle of next season, and has a major league career line of .283/.336/.391. He's old and he stinks. And he's a pretty good bet to play far more frequently than somebody like him should play. I'm not sure why a .350 OBP in 2007 is noteworthy to some, seems pretty clearly that it's flukey.

Any anti-Taguchi sentiment is clearly justified, and not deserving of some overblown nonsensical criticism like you've implied above.

Although he's 38, I wonder if the Cubs might sign him to a 1 year-deal to platoon with Pie, but more importantly, to give Fukudome a teammate to talk to everyday in his native tongue as he's getting used to his first year in the States.

Hoops

Can't we just make his interpretor a token coach instead?

If Murton's gone, there's a good chance DeRosa is taking that bench spot.

I wouldn't mind Taguchi either, as long as he's wearing another team's uni. No Taguchi!

I remember hearing somewhere that LaRussa said he kept certain players around b/c they were good at stealing signs. I've always thought that player was Taguchi.

Maybe, the Cubs aren't looking to sign So for a platoon with Pie; maybe, he's going to play the same role for Fuk that Jack played for Rodman on the Bulls that one season...
