I wonder what the deal is going to be? Sometimes I just can't figure out what the Jays are trying to do.

If memory serves, the Jays have been looking for a "hitting" SS for over 3 years. Offensively, Eck should be a step above McDonald and Clayton. But, will it be worth it? That depends on the salary.

Jays are in a tough spot. They're not as good as NYY and BOS, but definitely better than BALT and TB - what should they do?

Being in this division is killing them. They seem to go halfway to winning and halfway to prospects and still spend a lot of money. It just seems to be a lose lose situation to me.

You can pretty much pencil in TB to be better than Toronto in 2008.

From Rotoworld:

David Eckstein's deal with the Jays is worth $4.5 million for one year, according to FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal.

It's hard to believe the Rockies didn't jump on him at that price, though maybe they did and he took a similar amount to stay at shortstop. If the two sides hadn't had such unrealistic expectations earlier, the Cardinals and Eckstein really should have been able to work something out.

Ahahahahahaha. Not quite 36m, but close. :D

Rockies have lost out on all the mediocre 2B talent this offseason. Nobody wants to play for the NL Champs?

DeRosa for Tulowitzki, then get Roberts.

Didn't Eckstein turn down like $24 million from the Mets? Apparently all that grit clouded the business side of his mind.

Eckstein should fire his agent. That's horrible.

The Cards should fire their new GM....Eckstein is at least worth a million more than Isturiz

Damn. If I knew he was that cheap, I would have actually supported him over Theriot.

...and I think I just felt my soul leave my body.

Blue Jays signed infielder David Eckstein, who had been with the Cardinals, to a one-year, $4.5 million contract.

Eckstein would have been a very poor risk if given the four-year deal he wanted, but at $4.5 million for one year, he's a fine pickup for a Blue Jays team that had been set to start John McDonald. The plan is for him to supplant Reed Johnson in the leadoff spot. That Johnson won't be needed as a leadoff hitter could lead to him losing more at-bats to Matt Stairs. It also pushed Marco Scutaro down the depth chart. Now the Jays are going to have two utility infielders making about $2 million apiece, and still neither is a great option to fill in at third base when Troy Glaus gets hurt.
