Reports I'm hearing out of Houston is that Adam Everett could be non-tendered in the wake of the Tejada trade. If that happens, would he be an upgrade over Theriot/Cedeno and should the Cubs sign him.

His bat is horrible, but his defense is outstanding.

If we're going to have a shortstop that doesn't offer much at the plate, it might be best to have one of the best defensive shortstops around.

At this point in his career, Cesar Izturis is a better offensive player than he is a defensive player.

Let us pause momentarily to consider the magnitude of this statement.

Everett is actually a good defender though, unlike Mr. RGI who ran on reputation for years before he became a Cub.

According to Dewan's +/- system, Adam Everett was +98 from 2004-2006. The next best shortstop was +46 over the same period.

Edit:

Izturis was a mere +21 over the same span.

Probably wouldn't be a bad idea to sign him on the cheap and let Cedeno, Theriot and he compete openly for the job and then trade one of the losers, but I'm sure that won't happen. Everett hits from the wrong side of the plate to be a Hendry target this offseason.

The Cubs would be one of the best defensive teams in BB.

It's not that I think Theriot is a bad defensive player, he has good hands and decent range, but he has to play up a couple of steps b/c of his arm strength which shortens his range.

Translate that to the Sox and what helped Uribe with his range as he's not athletic and doesn't have great range but he plays back and can throw out runners in the hole with that hell of an arn arm. This is ironic given he might be at 2B for them and what makes him a good defensive SS won't be there.

No kidding. Easily above average at all 3 OF spots, the best defender in the game at SS, an elite defensive 1B, and above average D at 3B and C.

Did you really just call Alfonso Soriano "easily above average" at playing defense? Easily?!?

The accuracy and quick release of his throws more than covers up the fact that he's scared of the wall.

He's not pretty out there, but you can't really argue his range (when healthy) and arm. Not so good going back in the LCF gap, though. I probably wouldn't quite say "easily" either, but he's above average.

Healthy leg and that arm combined with a full year of Wrigley under his belt, I think he'll make up for bad instincts and be a better than avg. LF'er.

Yeah, it's the "easily" that I am incredulous about.

The fact that he's a LF plays a big part in it as well. If he were a RF, he probably would be average or maybe slightly above. As a LF, a lot of his competition are some pretty horrible OF's. Carlos Lee, Adam Dunn, Pat Burrell, Barry Bonds, Chris Duncan, Luis Gonzalez are great examples of players who Soriano is much better than in the OF, and there are many more.

Weren't the cubs one of the best defensive teams in 2007?

Weren't the cubs one of the best defensive teams in 2007?

Based on DER I'm pretty sure they were, despite the fact on paper they didn't project to be.

Last year:

RF-below avg.

CF-avg.

LF avg.

3B-above avg.

SS-below avg

2B-avg.

1B-above avg.

C-below avg.

Throw Everett, Fukudome, Soto, and Pie into that mix.

RF-above avg.

CF-above avg.

LF-above avg

3B-avg/above avg.

SS-above avg.

2B avg

1B-above avg.

C-avg/above avg.

Man... how did I miss that?

I also think that having Pie in CF will help Soriano, as the LCF gap will not be as big a hole with Pie in center.

Everett is awful.

no, he's not. i like how people will make blanket statements like this about bad offensive players without considering the fact that they're great defensively and save their teams dozens of runs a year in the field. you don't see anyone saying "ryan braun is awful" because he is atrocious defensively.
