I'm gonna go out on a limb and say a Cub fan made up this trade. If you were the Jay's would you do this trade?

Possible. The Jays might want to get out of that deal enough to accept less than normal.

In today's standards it's not even a bad deal.

A healthy Burnett would fetch as much or more than Bedard imo.

Yeah that rumor seems too ridiculous to be true. And I think Ricciardi's a pretty bad GM, but he's not that bad.

I watch about, 60-80 Jays games a year, he won't ever be healthy. Therefore; I want Burnett about as much as I want Gonorrhea.

I assume on TV because if not that's quite a drive!

I would have to assume Hendry (if this deal is real) has checked him out and is aware of his injuries.

But they take back Marquis and DeRosa, so they don't really get much salary relief. I guess they get out of all of his '09 salary, but I really doubt that suggested package would make it worth it.

Didn't Hendry want Burnett for quite some time now? I've heard about that back when he was with the Marlins. I know he's injury prone but he's no Prior. He's actually pitched 509 innings since 2005, how many innings has Prior pitched since that time?

How do you feel about cirrhosis of the liver with jaundice?

An injured AJ Burnett may be better than a healthy Jason Marquis.

Can't complain there. Marshall, Gallagher and others I think would be better than Marquis, the guy sucks.

But it's easier to move one of the 6's than one 12 too.

There certainly is a lot of smoke to the idea that Piniella wants Jason Marquis gone.

Be very afraid that the AL pitcher the Cubs are after could be Dontrelle Willis.

throws with the wrong hand. We need *more* lefty bats and *less* lefty arms.

Just asking: is that the case, or is it just wishful thinking by all of us?

25 starts by Burnett and 7 by Hart would produce more quality starts then 32 Marquis starts. Plus it would save my liver from the Ibuprofin induced toxicity. But, if the Cubs and Jays were involved in a deal, I put money on Dempster in the deal not Marquis. I remember reading something that Toronto ownership would like to have a couple Canadians on the roster, plus Dempster gives the Jays more financial flexibility.

Correct me if I am wrong, but doesn't Dempster have 2 years left at about 5 million/year. Marquis has something like 2 years at about 8/year.

Did Burnett sign like a 5 year 55million deal?

It wouldn't surprise. Hendry has a history of fondness for high stuff, wildly effective strikeout pitchers. Burnett has cut his walks and improved his K/BB and K/9 ratios since his early years, and would be a highly effective pitcher in the NL.

Dempster has 1 year, $5.5 million left on his contract.

Marquis has $6.375M and $9.875M remaining.

For what it's worth, Burnett is making 12 million each of the next three seasons, and has one of those nasty opt-out clauses after this one.

Scenario A: Burnett stays healthy. He opts out after the season when we're wanting to keep him.

Scenario B: Burnett gets injured. He does not opt out and we're on the hook for another two seasons and 24 million.

I can certainly see why his trade value would be lowered with that horrible contract.

Now it's starting to make some sense.

I'd love Burnett at 1/12. Let him walk after '08 and take the picks. '10 would be the only problem with an injured Burnett as again injured Burnett > Marquis and Marquis isn't making much less than Burnett in '09.

But again, this certainly is not happening.

Also, interestingly enough, the contract has a provision forcing Toronto to pay for eight round-trips per season between Toronto and Burnett's home in Maryland... by limousine. I guess it's for his wife.
