Remember when everyone was on the bandwagon for Theriot? Why is everyone including managment counting him out after a poor last couple of months? It was his first complete season as a pro and prior to last year his season high AB's in the Major Leagues was 134 compared to 537 last year. The guy had a .326 OBP and stole 28 bases. How many times in games did you see Theriot jump start an inning with an extra base hit? I think the Cubs need to give Theriot another year to prove his worth and if he fails 2nd time around, he has at least been given a shot.

Oh boy, here we go again. Theriot was 1 of the worst starting shortstops in the NL. His obp isnt good enough since he does nothing else with the bat. He doesnt take pitches at all. He is fine as a utility guy, but thats it.

It'd be superb if management actually was counting him out.

Lou is on record saying that Theriot is the starting SS, what more do you want them to do?

There is a definite argument for upgrading at SS because Theriot's offense is subpar. Who knows, the Cubs could be considering getting a SS via trade (and maybe their public support is a smokescreen). I do know that we need to upgrade elsewhere if Theriot's going to remain a starter.

it was his 1st full season, how can you say he is going to be a lifetime utility player after seeing him play after one season? He could turn out to be an Omar Vizquel for all I know; he doesn't strike out a lot, plays defense, has speed. By the way he had the 3rd most amount of walks on the Cubs last year to the person commenting about swinging at the first pitch

Everyone was on the bandwagon for Theriot to play over Cesar Izturis. There's a big difference between being on that bandwagon and being on a bandwagon to have him be the everyday starter next year.

I like Theriot. As a bench player.

Talk about damning with faint praise....

Oh, and there's no way he'll turn out to be an Omar Vizquel.

Just because he has the 3rd most amount of walks on an undisciplined team means nothing. He takes 3.5 P/PA. League average is 3.75.

Omar Vizquel is 10 times the defender Theriot is.

I salivate at the opportunity of replacing Ryan Theriot.

And I throw up thinking that Khalil Greene in a Cubs uniform will be the next Jose Hernandez with better deffense.

You...do know that that's really low, right?

Oh man, I missed that sentence.

Fanatic, you might NOT want to mention that when you're trying to compliment Theriot.

Hahahha. You realize Khalil playing half his games at Petco and still outperformed Theriot offensively?

By comparison, Juan Pierre had a stellar .330 OBP in his one year in Chicago.

1. His minor league numbers don't exactly show promise for a ton of improvement.

2. His range at SS is limited.

3. His approach at the plate isn't all that great.

4. He just turned 28...not exactly young for a guy that just completed his first full season in the big leagues.

The fact is noted and it won't be used again but just for the rest of you:

Khalil Greene last year had a stellar .291 OBP last year.

But what was his slugging and such? You put Greene in Wrigley, he will dwarf Theriot in every category minus OBP. His OPS would probably be close to 200 points higher.

While not stellar, his .335 career away OBP is better. It's not much better than Riot's, but Greene hits for more pwer and is a better fielder.

Is he worth what you are going to have to give up in return? Where would Greene fit in the lineup if he batted 5th or 6th in San Diego usually?

If the asking price is Pie, yes, he's worth it.

Um, has everyone missed the fact that Jose Hernandez (from his Cubs days) would have been a massive upgrade over Theriot?

Oh, and Jose Hernandez of today is about as good (or bad) as Theriot.

This is the problem with the looking at stats compared to watching the games....If you can replace Theriot with a Better player fine but you have to realize that without Theriot playing ss last year we probably do not make the playoffs. Theriot is probably a a utility guy but he is one of those players that makes things happen. If he goes 0 for 3 but leads off the 8th there was a good chance last year that Theriot gets on base.

The Cubs over the years have had a lot of players who have had better stats and make a lot more money but disappeared when the game is on the line.

There should always be a spot for a guy that is busting his you know whats every play. That type of play can fuel a team.
