Cardinals GM John Mozeliak's efforts to trade Scott Rolen probably didn't get any easier when manager Tony La Russa went on a 10-minute Rolen-related rant with Cardinals beat reporters at the winter meetings. Among other things, La Russa said the tension in his relationship with Rolen "bothers the heck out of me," and added that the situation has gotten "very personal." Barring a massive conciliation effort, it appears that the rift between Rolen and La Russa has reached the point of no return. On the positive side, the Cardinals shouldn't have much trouble getting Rolen to waive his no-trade clause if they can find a taker for him.

I'm guessing Rolen is traded relatively soon. I don't think he'll be on the Cards roster come opening day. Let's just hope that whoever takes him makes the Cardinals pay for pretty much all of his salary.

Geez, you would have thought Rolen had kicked a dog or something to get Tony so up in arms.

Maybe Tony and Scott should just go out for a couple of cocktails and smooth things over. I'm sure the Cards would spring for the necessary limo.

Don't worry. Wolf assured me that this was completely overblown.

No, I said we didn't have any reason to think it wasn't overblown.

Obviously that is no longer the case.

Both of these guys are babies.

TLR can really be a dick sometimes.

Who cares? It's fun watching the Cardinals fight.

As a Cardinals fan I don't like how this is playing out...Mozeliak pretty much showed his hand when he told everyone they were looking to deal Rolen. Then he was saying that they weren't getting fair value for him....this surely isn't going to help now. Might as well hold on to him now because theirs no way they get anything good in return for Rolen...

The Cardinals were dumb to even think they could get any kind of value out of Rolen.

TLR was on XM the other day and was saying that he's never seen anything like this in his 30 years of being involved in professional baseball. He was basically implying that Rolen has lost his mind.

The Brewers had Chris Capuano, Bill Hall and either Rolen's entire salary or the Cardinals pick up a portion of the salary and the Brewers add a "top" prospect.

That is value.

what started the tlr/rolen tension in the first place? i live down here and i cant even remember

Rolen didn't start one of the 2006 playoff(NLCS?) games and was not happy about it. Whether that qualifies as TLR or Rolen starting it, I'm not sure.

And that trade didnt go thru, because Doug Melvin had second thoughts because of all the baggage with Rolen right now. Rolen is a shell of his former self plain and simple.

TLR must have been drunk.

Not according to every media outlet I've read. The issue was the Cardinals wanted the Brewers to assume full salary as well as send a top prospect. The Brewers wanted to do one or the other. It apparently did not have anything to do with Rolen's baggage.

Of course I agree with you that he is a shell of his former self, but Melvin and the Brewers doctors looked at his medical files and were ready to go through with the trade even after that.

What kind of credibility does LaRussa have after turning his back on McGwire taking 'vitamins' in 1998? Wasn't there a rash of former African American Cardinal players who criticized LaRussa for being cheapshoted by him and Jocketty?

Many baseball fans laugh at Larussa's drinking problem and being caught as being long overdue.l
