According to Carroll:

Johan Santana to the Red Sox is all but done. Jon Lester, a center fielder, Justin Masterson and Ryan Kalish are the package. More details now.

I'd be happy as hell if I was a Sox fan and gave up Lester, Crisp, and two average prospects.

Ellsbury I might be less apt to part with.

It's still a pretty easy decision either way, in my opinion.

I wouldn't let Jacobi Eckstein stop me from getting Johan Santana.

Easy decision, but big difference. Crisp makes what? 8m a year? Ellsbury will be a rookie next year at league minimum, and will likely be more productive.

But, the big victory is you have Santana facing the Yankees rather than Boston facing Santana. That's huge.

Johan Santana-S-Twins Dec. 4 - 8:43 pm et

One of La Velle E. Neal III's sources told him the Twins and Red Sox, as of 7:20 p.m. CST, were still haggling over names in a Johan Santana deal.

Neal doesn't know if there's anyone besides the Red Sox still in the mix for Santana at the moment. Conflicting rumors have left it unclear whether the Red Sox have added Ryan Kalish to a package that supposedly included Jon Lester, Coco Crisp, Jed Lowrie and Justin Masterson.

At times like this, I'm really happy the Cubs play in the NL Central.

I'm surprised that's all it took. The Twins picked up a lot of guys with a lot of potential, but the only guy who's proven anything in that deal is Crisp.

Do you think Boston threw in some money for Minnesota's troubles?

The Yankees must be banking on the Wild Card for the next decade if they arent even trying to get him anymore.

Maybe they cooled on the idea when Pettitte announced he was coming back. They probably figure they can squeeze some other team of a starter without giving up as much in talent.

They come out of this whole deal with egg on their face, though. Hank Steinbrenner comes off as a loudmouth who uses the media like two things:

1) His personal Livejournal

2) His bully pulpit

Seriously, I wouldn't want to deal with the Yankees after seeing how they made ludicrous offers in all seriousness, complained loudly when the Twins turned down the offers, publicly vacillated on including a number of guys who should be in the deal from the get-go, dragged out negotiations because they were too stubborn, and then set a deadline which everyone knew was full of garbage. The Twins wanted to dump Santana, but they weren't stupid, desperate, or lacking other interested parties.

the really funny thing is that the yankees aren't really going to be that good next year

They are paying significantly more to basically be the same team. Rivera, Posada and ARod all got significant bumps. Pettitte should hold out for 25m.
